amen hooves...he is insufferable. I tuned in today for the first time in months to hear him running the show...he's overbearing to say the least.
|
I know a lot of insufferable & overbearing people involved in the sport, especially when you disagree with them.

I haven't listened to today's Bob Fox segment yet, but I look forward to Thoroughbred Legacy every week. I love hearing the the old races and the stories that go with them, and enjoy Bob's take on things. I understand every one has their own likes and dislikes, but I'm not getting the "overbearing" description. I think he's great.
|
In order to understand where the game is going, it is imperative to understand where it has been. It is like the history class you couldn't stand at times. Sometimes it has some interest to it, other times it's painful but if you do not learn from the mistakes of the past you end up laying down synthetic tracks all over California and closing Bay Meadows......
|
I think it's a generation thing. He reminds me of my father that will go on and on about something. Our generation is use to things quick and fast, just getting to the point.
Sometimes he does run on, but the subject matter is good. Spyder |
no doubt the content is very good but he could scale back the number of times hes on..maybee just be on when he has a race that is going to run that weekend..history lesson for a race in the near future..
|
I enjoy hearing Bob weekly. There are 1 or 2 other segments during the week that I'm not partial to. I just choose not to listen during those 30 minute segments. I'm sure there are many listeners that enjoy those segments that I don't like. Steve has 15 hours per week to broadcast. He's not going to please everyone all the time. I just appreciate the variety of the content he presents.

I like hearing his bowling scores!
In all seriousness... I used to not like his segment, but it has actually grew on me. In fact, yesterday's show had me waiting in my parking space for a few minutes so I could hear the last part of what he was talking about. |
if you are under 30 or 40, you probably dont like bob because most of the younger generation have a short attention span. give the guy a break, or use the channel knob!

Bob Fox
Like everthing else in life, sometimes I enjoy his segment and sometimes I think it is torture - must just be me.
I found this post very timely - I am currently reading Wild Ride by Ann Hagedorn Auerbach (one of Steve's must read selections) and Bob Fox figures quite prominently in the tale of Calumet in the 1980's with J.T. Lundy. The author does not paint a very favorable picture of either of these men. I would like to hear Bob's side of the story - I'd love a Bob Fox segment on Bob Fox and Calumet. |
More focus on the '80s would be a tad more palatable - his delivery is absolutely overbearing and insufferable. I like when he tries to debate himself about things that happened 60 years ago. It's ridiculous. I would never know, and I seriously doubt anyone can watch those old, grainy, re-reproduced a dozen times replays and actually make heads or tails out of any of it, much less hold an unflappable position.
Maybe if he was presented as more of a upbeat, nostalgic personality instead of a condescending know-it-all he'd be more accepted. That said, I'd pay big bucks to watch a John Nerud / Bob Fox debate - Especially when Fox tries to make the case that Dr. Fager was better than Secertariat. That would be good times. ;) |

Bob Fox is the only segment I tune out
I love the history of horse racing, but I can't bear to listen to him; it's not worth it. It is TORTURE! Glad to hear there are others who feel the same.
Let's get Steve Haskin in here with the history of racing as well as Thurs. for upcoming weekend. |
very much enjoyed the playing of riva ridges derby and belmont, altho the belmont tape was a bit fuzzy. i love going back in time to some of the best races this sport has seen. i always thought riva ridge was one of the more underrated and ignored horses-he was pretty much put in the shadows by his younger stablemate.
i missed some of them-only caught one of bold forbes' races, but will listen to the replay tomorrow morning while riding the roads... some of course will disagree, but i enjoyed his segment today. i'm a big history buff, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. |
If Bob Fox's segment is boring, I have to blame Steve for this.
Listen, Steve is a great host with a great voice for radio (that's right, I'll kiss the man's ass all day long because I tune in everyday during my drive home from work and then I listen TO THE EXACT SAME THING I HEARD THE NIGHT BEFORE on the drive to work the next day, so he must be doing something right), but there are certain guests he babies. I understand respect for your elders and being a gentleman and ambassador of the game and all that, but imagine the Bob Fox segment if Bob Fox were John Clayton and Steve were Sean Salisbury. I'm not sure how you can conjure up that much animosity between a host who makes every attempt to be a "class act" and an old man talking about the old days and playing YouTube videos....on the radio....but it sure would liven up the Bob Fox segment. |
i try to catch it live, but have better luck with morning replays instead. usually manage to get the whole show between the two airings. listened to andy serling this morning-a man of few words! lol enjoyed it all the same.

New thoroughbred legacy without Bob Fox
Is Bob part of racing history or will his legacy continue on???
|
Bring him back!
I hadn't seen this thread until today . . . I logged in to see what happened to Bob Fox, a segment that I looked forward to each week.
Here's one STRONG VOTE in favor of bringing him back! |
While I appreciate the contribution Bob Fox has made, the Thoroughbred Legacy segment will be going in a new direction from this point. It will feature individuals, races, horses, etc., from racing history with more in-depth analysis and conversation on topics and less replays of races. One thing that will certainly not be back is the airing of copyrighted material produced by others. I'm confident listeners will enjoy the feature as much as ever and invite suggestions for future topics. And Fox will visit on occasion I'm sure.
|
And i will be giving my bowling scores...0.

I really enjoyed the new direction. I am sure that the folks you are interviewing also appreciate the interest in some of their past accomplishments. I assume this is probably more work for Steve and KC, so, as always, thank you for all that you do. Looking forward to Valasquez next week (I think that is who you said would be on) |
:) i think bob fox is great
|
What happened with Bob Fox? Was there some kind of problem with him playing copyrighted material or something? I know that his segments were being met with mixed reaction (at least around here). Maybe he just got the ax for a more dynamic historical segment?
I am going to miss those bowling stories. Electrifying. You know how when you hear someone's voice who you have never seen and you try to envision what they look like based on their voice? Well, when Bob talks I'm picturing Mickey Rooney in The Black Stallion. With John White, it's ESPN's John Clayton all the way. Funny thing is, I've seen John White since, but my mind is stubbornly painting me a picture of The Professor. For whatever the above nonsense is worth... |

That would be "The Professor" John Clayton, of course.
|
sorry, but john white has always reminded me of mr. rogers
