Hats off to the Rays

Played first game of 2nd half of the year tonight.. won again and enjoy a 1.5 game lead over the Bosox. It's great... Leo, Elvis and Bigs likely hangin' in Hillsborough celebrating as we speak...

Scav 07-01-2008 09:32 PM

**** the god damn Rays....:)

Heels1989 07-01-2008 09:33 PM

The new evil empire. ;) :D

Go Sox

declansharbor 07-01-2008 09:33 PM

and Im inclined to think they're not a fluke, they are for REAL...A solid effort allthe way around...

Whats the attendance looking like this year?? Has it picked up since the fans realized they have a contender?

Monday night we actually out screamed the Sox fans for once. They will draw 100k for the series. The big attendance test will be this weekend vs. KC. I think they would be happy with 60 to 70K.

Are they building a new stadium for you guys?

They have played well so far but it is a shame they don't draw to the level of their talent. Listening to their radio guy call a game on XM is akin to what it must have been like to get the news in USSR during the 80's....

opusone 07-02-2008 08:59 AM

The stadium issue is back burnered for now. The economic timing was awful. People around here are still worried about property tax and insurance issues.
The models of the new stadium look great on paper. The heat and rain during the summer are a big concern. It started raining Monday about the eighth inning. If we weren't inside it would have been an hour at least to finish that game.

Too bad...Tough to sell a funding plan for a retractable roof stadium with gas at $4.50. You think they would ever leave Tampa?

Cannon Shell 07-02-2008 09:08 AM

The keys to the Rays future is will they pay for some of the guys to stay once they reach free agency. The payroll now I believe is in the $25 million range.

opusone 07-02-2008 09:15 AM

My fear is they move from St Pete to Tampa. I would still go just not as much. The roof is actually not retractable. If can find the design link I will post it. The material is similiar to a sail and would be raised over the field.

Here's one

I saw pictures of the design when I went to a spring training game this march. It looks strange.

they payed Kazmir (sp?) and i think that is a sign of things to come. They had 30 some odd thousand the other night for a week night game and theyve never had that kind of attendance.

Hopefully they will reinvest the money.

Mortimer 07-02-2008 10:13 AM

We need expert opinion by The Gardens in here.

Their payroll is actually $43 million for this year. However when you consider that Shields makes 1 million, Crawford 5, Garza 400k, Howell 400k, Jackson 400k, Iwamura 2.4, Navarro 400k, Upton 400k, and Longoria 400k the payroll is going to way up if they are to keep most of these guys. I dont know what the status is on a year by year basis but Shields is pitching himself into 15 million a year territory, Crawford is in the same range, Howell will be 4 or 5 million a year as a set up guy, Navarro is probably a 10 million a year catcher, and Upton and Longoria are still a few years away but arent going to be happy unless they get a raise and may be 20 million a year gys by then.

opusone 07-02-2008 10:58 AM

I know for sure they have Longoria signed for a long term deal. They wrote that deal after his first week up from the minors in April.

opusone 07-02-2008 11:00 AM

He hit his first career home run against the New York Yankees on April 14, 2008. The Rays signed Longoria to a six-year, $17.5 million contract with options for 2014, 2015 and 2016.

From wikipedia

horseofcourse 07-02-2008 11:17 AM

I predict a Cleveland Indians scenario for the Rays...they'll keep everyone and sign them young to long term contracts then the 2nd contract comes up they'll disappear...(see Belle, Albert, Ramirez, Manny, Thome, Jim, Sabathia, CC). They could be a serious team for 5-6-7 years however. I'll be rooting for them as open heart surgery with no anasthesia is more fun than watching the Yankees and Red Sox win.

From wikipedia

.....piling on.....

Its a one year option for 2014, and a 2 year option to cover 2015-2016.
Those are club options. Total worth could be $44 million.

I have to admit....it's finally starting to set in. For those who don't know....I am on the Rays' grounds crew. We USED to dread when the bull pen came in because we knew it would be a long night. Now we are a BIT more confident.

It's also GREAT to see/hear more Rays fans than away team - especially Sox/Yanks fans.

New stadium probably won't happen. At least not yet. The location is awesome
(ask Chuck and TC) the area is just beautiful however I worked EVERY spring training game and it was pretty hot . The new design wont keep the heat out, just a straight down pour.

Anyway...if anyone is in town for a game, come down and see me. I'm the only bald grounds crew member and usually manicure 3rd base.

I am in the front row on the right.

So..how do you get a gig like that? Did you know someone or just applied? I'm sure after a while it's just a job, but that's pretty cool

Leo....lucky for you and I there are no height requirements for our jobs.:o

GBBob 07-02-2008 12:18 PM

Shouldn't Bigs be on that crew?

Mortimer 07-02-2008 12:38 PM

I don't know ,but stonegossard sure should.

opusone 07-02-2008 12:50 PM

Supposedly sold out tonight. Although there will be plenty of tickets outside and around Fergs sportsbar across the street.

opusone 07-02-2008 12:54 PM

31 were you working back when they used to dance to Buffett?

Had some friends who worked there.

....and is only "just a job" after a while when you're losing.

I would love it, but I don't need the money.

Betting with Scavs is supplementing my income nicely.

Scav 07-02-2008 06:09 PM

At least I get to watch my pain tonight instead of watching ESPN Gamecast :)

Last nights game was a HUGE test. Now....what happens if we lose the series to Kansas City this weekend? Its a 4 game series. That is how it happened in the past so in my mind, THIS series against KC is as big as the series against Boston.

We swept the Cubs last month then pooped the bed against Houston. We'll see.

31lengths 07-05-2008 08:06 AM

Actually....who makes the All Star team for the Rays?

Mortimer 07-05-2008 10:06 AM

They probably wind up in last place by the end of September.
