Camera Angles on ESPN

are making me dizzy. I think I'm gonna puke.

Spudder

eajinabi 06-07-2008 11:37 AM

Absolutely horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ArlJim78 06-07-2008 11:38 AM

Who the heck is directing the ESPN coverage?
Race 2 from Belmont had 17 "Takes"(changes of cameras) for the race. 13 of them were before they turned for home.

When Durkin screams that a horse checked into the turn you never saw it.

Morons found a way to ruin the coverage.

Move over, I am puking too.

phystech 06-07-2008 11:43 AM

Agree - they need to cut the artsy ****.....just show the track feed and then give me the cute stuff on the replays...

someone in the truck trying to be creative.

AeWingnut 06-07-2008 11:48 AM

is this why TVG and HRTV aren't showing the races.. so ESPN can :zz:
"lets bring in the XFL cam"

I'll just watch it on the internet

what a bunch of idiots
always going to non-horse racing people to promote the sport

ArlJim78 06-07-2008 11:48 AM

one second you're looking at the pan view, then a quick cut to the view from space, then they are heading right at you, next the moving truck shot for about 3 seconds. makes your head spin. they have the right ingredients but they need a director that knows how to watch races. they should have one live race structure, and then a different one for replays.

Coach Pants 06-07-2008 11:52 AM

I'm hoping they show Big Brown bucking in the stall during the far turn of the 3rd. Maybe show P. Diddy posing like a douchebag at the sixteenth pole.

SundayStar 06-07-2008 12:26 PM

hopefully they don't go spastic like this with the belmont.

Travis Stone 06-07-2008 12:43 PM

Remember that ESPN is not here to present a simulcast feed. They are here for entertainment. Anyone outside of our horse racing circle enjoys the cool angles, cuts and unique perspectives.

Yep, give a 14 to 23 year old a video recording device these days, and they'll likely produced similarly flavored work. For whatever reason, that's the preferred style at the moment, and has been for a few years....

MaTH716 06-07-2008 12:46 PM

Way to foucus on a run away winner guys, Nobody cares about battles for 2nd and 3rd!

Coach Pants 06-07-2008 12:47 PM

My mind is exploding.

And I see an industry guy is defending this debacle. Shocking.

I agree on it being entertainment but so many cuts as to make you nauseous doesn't seem the best way to go. I feel like I'm watching the opening battle scene of Gladiator.

we all would enjoy the cool angles, cuts and unique perspectives if they were shown at the proper time, which is after the race is over.

you give them far too much credit. people outside of horse racing circle deserve better, just like we do. the people outside wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Travis Stone 06-07-2008 12:53 PM

Maybe it's just our ignorance to what others think of the game? Or what they're looking for?

I haven't seen a race yet, so let me toss that in here, however, this dying need for the typical pan shot by racing fans on ESPN is lame.

How about this -- no viewers -- no ESPN -- then how would we feel? There would be no camera angles to show.

I just got to the booth and will watch the fifth race and see what it's all about.

I just know that a friend of mine who has a brother not at all interested in racing made comments about how he could get into it more with the cool camera angles they showed for Dubai's racing coverage.

Merlinsky 06-07-2008 12:56 PM

I actually wasn't having a problem with it until they allowed a drunken 5 year old hold the camera during that winner's circle photo op. One word...Steadycam.

Oh wait did I say drunken 5 year old? I meant Hank Goldberg.

pgardn 06-07-2008 12:57 PM

You guys dont play enough video games.

This is how I feel when I attempt to play,
become completely disoriented,
and then I am immediately blown up by
some teenager who plays the controller
like a master typist on a keyboard.

What difference does it make what others think? Is someone turning in for camera angles? If they started showing NFL games from the blimp would non fans start watching? If they showed Red Sox games from the top of the Green monster would that be cool? Maybe for one pitch but people want to watch the races or see the games. When you make 17 cuts in a race that is just over a minute long you either have ADD or you are doing way too much.

watch a race first then before commenting. it BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!

its not the different angles per se, its that they present it in a rapid fire way so the viewer gets no perspective of the race.
right idea, but wrong implementation.

TheSpyder 06-07-2008 01:08 PM

As someone said, the camera angles are fine if they didn't have some director that's acting like a chimp on speed.

Travis Stone 06-07-2008 01:10 PM

I'm going to check it out.

Every year its the same old drivel that people want to see the pan shot on ESPN... but they're not in "that" business. If they were, they'd just rip NYRA's simulcast feed and show it.

The rapid fire changing of camera angles I mis-read to mean the various angles, so I'll check it out.

But in the grand scheme of things, we should be thankful ESPN is willing to devote so much time. In the end, it's a win-win.

Yeah, watch some races with it. I don't mind the concept at all for ESPN but it is being implemented very poorly.

Danzig 06-07-2008 01:40 PM

someone mentioned the dubai cameras. the one on the truck running just ahead of the horses is a good one.
however, the races aren't that long, so trying to show many different angles will only result in a chopped up, nausea-inducing dizzying mess--continuity and close ups would be the key here.
this isn't nascar-they can't cover it the same way, there are no single sponsors demanding air time

cowgirlintexas 06-07-2008 01:58 PM

TheSpyder 06-07-2008 01:58 PM

OK that's a new angle...OF A GOLF COURSE. Get that monkey off the controls!

Must have fired the director as they showed the race the usual way. Someone must have said something.

She's around. It's been a few minutes but might be taking the time off like the other guys and coming back to ABC later on. She talked about how BB was freaking out in the stall for a little bit. After that I don't remember when I last saw her.

Ok about the Secretariat replay for Zito, what the heck was that? I mean there's a fast forward button sure but I thought you weren't supposed to do that crap manually while it was airing. It's as if they were running a clip from YouTube and personally holding the little button and shifting it forward only to have it get stuck because it hadn't finished loading yet.

Storm Cadet 06-07-2008 03:13 PM

saw her at Belmont yesterday, she's one skinny woman. She has definitely dropped some since I last saw her in person but oh so good looking :{>:

Nice touch to do the Jim McKay retro at the intro of the cutover to ABC...

Thus far no mention of the Belmont plumbing problems today posted in the other thread....

Storm Cadet 06-07-2008 04:21 PM

no way would they mention it in deference to NYRA hosts.

They are really trying to hype racing, no bad press today!

Gotta luv Shaq daddy in the jockey outfit for mineral water!

Storm Cadet 06-07-2008 04:31 PM

Durkin said all facilities are now open! Tough holding it in:p

I've got the telecast burning on DVD.

I'm sure most of us racing fans have some recording going, just in case we see the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years....

If not, I'd recommend it.
