Best handicapping angles
I'm curious what you all consider the most important factors when handicapping a race.
For example, I tend to lean towards class and competition as a starting point. |
Highest last-race Beyer.
And a win over the track. Third career start is also a plus. |

I bet on any horse that is likely to cross-fire while running in a straight line.
|
1. 3YO's trying turf for first time with grass breeding.
2. Horses with back class and poor form going favorite distance or track for first time in a long time. 3. Horses with bad trips 4. DT stable horses...unreal in the money %! |
Serling's Dunce Cap selections...and of course nothing but chalk

When a trainer has a really strong contender and places another horse in the race with much longer odds, I play the longer shot to win and box the exacta always.
When a trainer has entries in several big races in different parts of the country or world, I lean towards the horses at the location where he actually is. Trainers like to get their picture taken. Back in his heyday, when Lukas was running multiple strings all over the place, where he was was where he felt he had the best chance of winning. If he was in a suit instead of jeans and a shirt, it was a lock. When Pletcher has a horse in a race and JVelasquez rides another horse, I like to bet the horse JV is riding. |

My fav angle is a horse 2nd time on the turf with decent breeding if it did anything at all in its 1st time on the grass. Hit the board, showed some speed, closed at the end anything that shows a hint of talent. Also i will always bet a smart strike 1st time on the turf if the trainer is decent and the horse has shown some talent.

1st time smart strike worked out for me last Fri at CD borel came thru on the rail at 9-1 pretty sweet. ONly problem is that is the only friggin good bet ive hit at CD so far this meet. Its been brutal for me so far.

Never bet a horse named "Warren's".................. Must play Joy Scott on a 5/8 oval. Toss any horse trained by Steve Knapp. |

Two favorites:
1. Stretch out, blinkers off. 2. In maiden races, purchase price of horse as a multiple of the sire's stud fee. The higher the multiple (especially if over 5X), the more likely that the horse is an exceptional individual (at least per the market). That's not to say that buyers don't make mistakes, but this is often a pretty good guide. |
Dropping down, cutting back, turf to dirt. Those three together.
Never huge prices, but lots in that 4-1 -- 6-1 range. Also when a firster runs evenly and beats half the field. Bet those ones right back. |
- Flashed speed in last (signals pending improvement)
- Hidden competitive Beyer - Last out winner I need to justify the last, but it never seems to fail, a horse who wins his/her last race is in form, and that along is worth consideration. But don't think I bet blindly $5k's going into entry-level allowances all the time!! |
