Best Broodmare
Since I am just getting into breeding, and was thinking about it, I came up with a fun topic.
Who was (is) the best broodmare ever? Not just who gave birth to the best horse, but as in general what mare has had the best racers? So far Toussaud comes to mind for me. Are there any others out there? We always talk about who are the best sires. Lets talk about mommas for a change. :) |

What a nice mare! That is a good one. Two triple crown races from her offspring. Sad that she died. |

Here is a list of all the mares named Kentucky's "Broodmare of the year". This might help you narrow it down. |
I think her name is Sharon Brown. Holy Bull and few others out her could run a little.
|
Let's end the silliness here ...
... the best broodmare ever was Mumtaz Mahal ... second was La Troienne ... the rest ... nowhere. |
I'll take La Troienne on top..

BB,
I don't know.. I could see her and Blue Larkspur rolling around and her getting on top now and then... |

THIS IS A SILLY TOPIC? But beating poor LITF up is a great way to spend the last couple of days... |

This is a great topic ... the silliness occurs when anyone mentions a broodmare whose name isn't Mumtaz Mahal or La Troienne. |

I haven't followed the breeding aspect that much. Just now beginning to learn slowly. Just thinking of horses that I knew of.

For example ... see if you can figure out the meaning of my last response to Kasept. |

Besides Mumtaz Mahal, I'd include Miss Disco, the dam of Bold Ruler and another mare named Geisha, the dam of Native Dancer.

Then you can go. |

la troienne and mumtaz mahal immediately jump to mind.
more modern? how about hasili? dam of cacique, intercontinental, dansili, banks hill, and heat haze--all gr 1 winners. toussaud, weekend surprise have been mentioned--but how about personal ensign? not just a great racer, but a blue hen mare as well. |

Sorry ... Big Hurry was by Black Toney. |
on pedigreequery.com any mare with an asterisk next to her name denotes a reines de course. that means she was a producer of great repute.
My personal favs are Somethingroyal (dam of Secretariat), La Troienne, Shenanigans, Jameela...there are so many and they are just as important in breeding as the sires. |

The more modern broodmares ... like the great ones you've mentioned ... will have to stand the test of time before they can join them in the pantheon. |
and i'll tell ya, it's very tough to find any mares tail female from the 6-e family back to Selene. Selene is a huge influence for good racing.

Cursing and personal attacks are always wrong. Maybe you should have provided this link ... http://www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/LaTroienne.html The correct answer is ... Big Event and Businesslike were the first two foals ... of an eventual six ... produced by Blue Larkspur and La Troienne. Their other foals were Broke Even, Bee Ann Mac, Belle Histoire, and Belle Of Troy. La Troienne was owned by Col. Bradley ... and he gave all his horses names which began with the letter "B." Many of today's champions and graded stakes winners trace directly back to La Troienne ... eighty years after she herself was born. Please take the time to read all about her on the provided link. |

She's probably #3 on the list of great broodmares. |
interesting about Somethingroyal in that she was the oldest mare to produce a triple crown champion, Secretariat at the age of 18 i think. she only made one appearance on the track. unplaced at Saratoga.

My faves
Growing up and going to racing in New York in the late 70s and 80s my two favorite barns were Darby Dan and Rokeby.
Thus, i would have to go with Flower Bowl who sired Graustark and His Majesty within the Darby Dan side and, Glowing Tribute who sired Sea Hero, Hero's Honor, Wild Applause and Eastern Echo for Rokeby... |
Quote:
Did you forget that Flower Bowl also produced Hall Of Fame filly Bowl Of Flowers ... or was that because she was owned by Brookmeade? |
Quote:
Hasili and toussaud are my favorites. |

That response is also wrong. The link I provided was to "tbheritage" ... not to "pedigreequery." Sorry ... that was your third incorrect response ... I'm afraid I have to disqualify you. |
