A deserving horse like Rock Hard Ten got excluded from the Derby because he was DQ'd from 2nd place in the Santa Anita Derby.
A horse like a Big Brown, Hey Byrn, Face The Cat or even Elisyum Fields (with just 70K) all could find themselves excluded even with a big effort in the Florida Derby if they foul someone. |
Where do the fillies (Country Star and potentially the Larry Jones' duo) rank on this list? Wouldn't Eight Bells be about $60K with County Star and Proud Spell both well over $500k?

That Delta Jackpot race is just a joke. has anyone in that race even moderately ran well since then? |
Z Fortune ran 2nd to Pyro but then did nothing in his next start. . . That race is definitely an anti-key race. . .

millionaire rule
I thought there used to be a millionaire rule. Any horse that has over a $1 mil in earnings doesn't win the Ky Derby (not counting Street Sense)

Z Humor is the horse from the Delta Jackpot, who also isn't much, but has obviously been mismanaged. |

I say he was deserving because he would have certainly taken more money than any of the horses coming in from So. Cal that year. |

I wouldn't include any Zayat horse with enough earnings as "unlikely" no matter what the horse has to go through to do it.

I imagine they come up with those silly rules for a reason. not counting Funny Cide (gelding), Barbaro (RAN curse) and Street Sense (BCJC winner) just to name a few. The logic behind millionaire rule could be something about peaking early. Best horse in November/ February isn't the best in May. it's not how I play the race. Just remembered the list |
I'm pretty sure Salute The Sarge has nearly $250,000 in graded earnings from last year.
He's nominated to this weekend's San Miguel Stakes at Santa Anita. |

I see Nikki'sgoldensteed listed here, but not on either Bloodhorse or Kentuckyderby.com. Have I missed something?
|
Nevermind, did some quick google research and discovered why.
|
Anyone see an updated list anywhere?
--Dunbar |
I poked around Bloodhorse, but still looking for an updated list.
|
Steve, the list isn't showing bold or italics

larry stewart in the l.a. times is reporting that bob black jack won't go.

Thx for spotting this and bringing it forward... And good for the Kasparoff Brothers and Co. for being prudent. The best stories in this crop are the inexpensive horses from 'everyday' connections doing well like this horse and Smooth Air. Was telling Haskin yesterday that Bob Black Jack reminded me of the King of the Roxy/Stormello type 3yo, and can be super productive if they treat him right. |
What kind of finish in the Arkansas would lock up a spot in the Derby gate for Blackberry Road?

Thanks very much for creating and posting the list, Steve.
Looks like you have 19 & 20 reversed. --Dunbar |
Will Pletcher (assuming Monba does not get the earnings needed this weekend) bring back Atoned or TW in the Lexington and try to at least get one in the starting gate?
|
Quote:
“Monba went well this morning, and he’s a possibility for the Blue Grass or the (Grade 2 Coolmore) Lexington (on April 19),” Pletcher said about the son of Monarchos who races for Starlight, Lucarelli and Saylor. Monba won his career debut at Keeneland last October, then won a one-mile allowance at Churchill Downs. “Probably have to make a decision on Wednesday,” Pletcher added. Stopping by the Pletcher barn Sunday morning was Cot Campbell, head of Dogwood Stable, whose Atoned finished fourth in Saturday’s Illinois Derby (G2) at Hawthorne Race Course. Atoned turned in the best finish of four Pletcher horses that competed in major Kentucky Derby preps across the country. “It was a funny race yesterday because they finished like they started,” Campbell said of the Illinois Derby. “They just kind of got in single file and went around there. “I don’t think he liked the surface and there wasn’t a lot of speed in ahead of him. I don’t know whether we may run him in the (Coolmore) Lexington, which is possible, or wait and try the Preakness (G1) or skip that and wait for the Peter Pan (G2). Those would seem to be the options.” One option not mentioned was the Kentucky Derby and Campbell seemed to raise the white flag on that possibility. “I don’t think he would get in with $125,000 (in graded stakes earnings),” Campbell said. “We wouldn’t throw anything out today, but maybe after he has been back here two or three days, we will see how he is and figure out something. But I would think $125,000 wouldn’t cut it (for being in the top 20 in graded stakes earnings).” |

I think Atoned might sneak in after a defection or three and injury or two.. Monba is NOT certain for Bluegrass... Doubt McNair shoves Texas Wildcatter into anything. Not his style. And since you brought up Stonerside, here's a picture of a REAL racehorse winning the Wood Memorial... ;) ![]() Congaree 2001 Wood Memorial (108 Beyer/1:47.4) |
BTW, graded earnings list fully updated with notations...

You might want to include Eight Belles. Connections are going to monitor the Derby contenders to decide whether or not to run for the roses.

Either way, a Jones-trained filly is in a top spot on the list.. Would be very surprised by Eight Belles though. It's Proud Spell who is the appropriate Derby filly. Will have Larry Jones on ATR today or tomorrow to clarify, but I bet he won't commit to anything until Derby-Oaks Week. |
Quote:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...y_hopeful.html Trained by Larry Jones and owned by Wilmington's Rick Porter, Eight Belles is nominated for both the May 3 Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, the big race of the year for 3-year-old fillies that is run the day before the Derby at Churchill Downs. She has $210,000 in graded-stakes earnings, enough to make the Derby field. Porter said last night that the filly's handlers would keep the Derby open as a possibility. A final decision does not have to be made until Derby week. "I'd like to find a way to run in the Derby," said Porter, the owner of last year's Derby runner-up, Hard Spun. |
