George Washington's girl

BH.....

George Washington Sires Filly

George Washington, who was euthanized after breaking down in the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) in October, sired his first reported foal, according to European Bloodstock News. A filly out of the Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly was born Feb. 4 at the Irish National Stud.

Sired by Danehill, George Washington was a two-time Cartier Award winner before entering stud at John Magnier and partners' Coolmore Stud in Ireland in 2007. He was relieved of stallion duty after experiencing fertility problems and returned to training. Coolmore then retired one of its group I winners, French champion Holy Roman Emperor (also by Danehill), to take the place of George Washington at stud.

Back with trainer Aidan O'Brien, George Washington ran in three group I races leading up to the Classic, running third in two of them and fourth in the other. In the Classic, he suffered a fracture of a cannon bone as well as fractured sesamoids.

Flawlessly, owned by Stefano and Loreto Luciani, is the dam of French group winner Ombre Legere and U.S. grade I stakes-placed Flawly, dam of French group winner Best Name.

If anyone can find a picture.....

_ed_ 02-06-2008 06:00 PM

Yeah I'd love to see a picture, want to know if she looks anything like her dad.

letswastemoney 02-06-2008 06:32 PM

Flawlessly is in Europe? I didn't know that.

GenuineRisk 02-06-2008 10:36 PM

I was about to post this in the Paddock, and then realized MMSC would already have been on top of it in International. :)

I make no secret of being angry that breeding controls the sport, but I can't help being happy at this news. How many was he said to have actually impregnated? Seven?

Different Flawlessly. The Wolfson's Flawlessly was a homebred by Affirmed.

I thought the number was six, but I'm not sure.

A more detailed B-H story is up...

http://www.bloodhorse.com/viewstory_plain.asp?id=43544

Hints that Coolmore doesn't believe there will be ANY other Geo. Washington foals. Makes this a fascinating filly...

NoChanceToDance 02-07-2008 01:25 PM

The last I heard was that many of the mares had 'slipped' and that his one remaining mare in foal was somewhere in Italy. So whether this mare has moved from Italy to Ireland or whether there are at least two, I'm not sure.

Why couldn't she have been at the National Stud here..... I would have been with the foal everyday then.

George Washington had a girl

Sort of good news to a very sad story. George Washington's only foal was born today.

cowgirlintexas 02-07-2008 08:05 PM

Racing Post...

Goffs offer George Washington foal at November Sale

Rachel Pagones

A RARE foal by George Washington, the scintillating 2,000 Guineas winner who died last year while contesting the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park, will be offered at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

The youngster should be particularly sought after as a filly who would have potential broodmare value even without the added rarity value of her sire, who had been returned to training at Ballydoyle after suffering severe fertility problems in his first year at stud.

Although it is widely believed the son of Danehill impregnated only a few mares, Andrea Mercer, Stud Book director at Weatherbys, could not confirm how many of his foals were born.

“George Washington has got progeny, but there are many mares from whom we are still awaiting returns, and I therefore would not be in a position to comment on whether this foal is the only progeny or how many there may be,” she said.

The filly, out of the Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly, is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Ombre Legere and the Group 1-placed mare Flawly, who produced Prix du Jockey-Club runner-up Best Name.
She was bred by Stefano Luciani of Azienda Agricola Luciani, who also bred the highest priced foal at last year's November Foal Sale, a Galileo colt out of Captivating.

The Irish National Stud, which consigned the Galileo colt last year, will act as consignor.

Luciani said: “The filly really looks like her sire – in fact the similarity is incredible. She's a good-bodied filly with plenty of bone and exudes quality.”

George Washington was a four-time Group 1 winner, having also won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, the National Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes, as well as the Group 2 Railway Stakes. A half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Grandera, now at stud in Japan, he briefly commanded a fee of 60,000 euros before he was pulled from studin March.

Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said: “Goffs is honoured to have the opportunity to sell this truly unique filly and we are confident of achieving another excellent result for her breeders, who have been great patrons of the Irish breedingindustry for many years.”

George Washington Filly

http://auctions.bloodhorse.com/article/47897.htm

Does anyone here know anything about Gildawn stud? They bought GW's only offspring at the sale today, paid 280k euros.

Will they just breed her or will she make it to the track?

Any info is appreciated. I don't generally follow the international scene (I can't even keep up with the state-side scene) but I thought GW was a lovely horse and was at Monmouth for his ill fated BCC. The image still haunts me.

Thanks in advance!

cowgirlintexas 11-21-2008 02:01 PM

How much does that equal in dollars? About $400k?

Me too. I hope she does him proud.

Arletta 10-09-2009 06:34 AM

It will be interesting to see if they even try to race her.. Seems like she is worth enough now, just as a broodmare.

NoChanceToDance 10-11-2009 06:13 PM

I've only seen a couple of pictures of the filly, but she can't have been much of a looker. To make only that much with the pedigree and the hype and being George Washington's only foal.

Add to the fact that Coolmore weren't even interested in her as broodmare potential.

With ease. She has an odd running style, her head and neck are held so high, is that common with European runners or is it just her age?

NoChanceToDance 07-09-2010 11:39 PM

She won well, but easy to get carried away with. Richard Hannon's 2yos are always ready to win first up and for a Newbury maiden it was pretty weak - i know the horse that ran second isn't up to much. The race was also run in a pretty slow time considering how fast the track was.

I've heard rumours that she had xrays issues as a youngster and wasn't the most correct, which is probably the reason why Coolmore weren't at all interested, even just for a broodmare prospect. Which seems to me that they knew something that others didn't?

I'd want to see her race again before I thought she was going to be above average.
