It seems to me like there is some value in Always First at 8/1. He closed into absolutely no pace and prevailed in his last start at Arlington, and really hasn't run a bad race since switching barns. EC is certainly the class of this field and the most likely winner, but Always First could be a good play at a price.

You have to love the logic of the connections though: What do you do with a horse that has failed to hit the exacta in FOUR consecutive G3s? Well you stick him in a G1 of course! By the way, here are the past performance: http://www.drf.com/row/pps/07sworddancer.pdf |

DRF... Better Talk Now out of Sword Dancer By DAVID GRENING SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Better Talk Now was declared out of Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga due to an injury to his left front ankle, trainer Graham Motion said Friday. His defection figures to leave English Channel a heavy favorite in the 1 1/2-mile turf race. Motion said that Better Talk Now suffered a puncture wound to his left front ankle during the running of the United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park, in which he finished third, three lengths behind English Channel. Motion said he thought he had the issue under control until Friday morning when fluid began sweeping from the ankle. Motion said he had to put the gelding on antibiotics. "It looks quite angry this morning, he's very tender on it," Motion said. "The timing is terrible." Motion said that Better Talk Now would walk for two weeks and if the injury heals properly the horse could be pointed to the Man o' War on Sept. 8. |
Thanks, hopefully they get the injury under control.

Really?? Other than TTM, whos is in there for him to duck? After Market is having a good year, but I still don't think he is in EC's league. |
and had channel gone to arlington, some would wonder why he's shipping when there's a race in his backyard.
can't please everyone..may as well just pleasure yourself....that is how it goes, right??:D |

I'm with Miraja -- I like Always First. |
WTF was that all about?!? Since when the hell does EC start running his best race from that far back?? Almost 10 lengths back after the first 6 furlongs?? I would love to know what JV was thinking taking him back that far. Was it Pletchers idea? A grade 1 race surely aint the damn time to try a different type of running style.

'Cole...I missed the race yesterday. I just got back from a weekend at the lake, so it was the first chance I had to watch the replay. I knew that he had finished second since I had talked to Bethani and Hooves, but I was shocked to see him taken back so far. Really strange. Hope you are doing well. |

yeah....sure. |

Kev, he looked like he was being strangled back by JV going into the first turn and down the backstretch. His head was up higher than I've ever seen him run. I think he wasted alot of energy in the first half mile because of that. I didn't think he'd even get 2nd after that. Ran better than I thought. Don't know what they were thinking but don't count him out of the BC Turf yet. Doesn't he have a fondness for the Monmouth turf course? |
IMO....I agree with Durkin. I don't think there is a chance in hell that the fractions posted for that race are correct. :22 3/5 for the first 1/4 and a :46 2/5 half?? No f*cking way. They were crawling early on.
|
Quote:
Maybe crawling is a poor choice, but you and I have both watched enough races to know that there is no way in hell they went the fractions posted. |

Not that it matters either way, as EC clearly got beat. Borel gave a typical up the rail move on a very good horse and JV gave a very suspect ride. Other than EC's maiden breaking win, there isn't a race in his form where he was anywhere close to being 9-10 lengths back after the first 6 panels. Very strange... |
