Citizen Kane

In honor of AFI's new release of the Top 100 Movies of All Time I watched Citizen Kane for the first time, which has maintained the top billing on the list when released in 1998 and again in 2007. Excellent movie. I found myself really questioning how I felt about Kane...did I have sympathy for Kane or was he really the self centered man that Leland claimed?

Have others seen this movie and what did you think?

AFI's complete list can be downloaded through this link:

Haven't seen Citizen Kane for many years...I should watch it again before commenting...Clockwork Orange is a piece of garbage that should not be on the list, glad to see Blade Runner get listed however.

I do not see FARGO on the list.

This disturbs me. We can all pick movies that we dont like on the list. But FARGO should be on that list. A lot of good movies on the list, quite a few which I have not seen. No fargo... I weep.

ok, so it's 11 i highlighted....to kill a mockingbird and sophie's choice are incredible novels. it's a shame harper lee never wrote another book. i have one other of styrons, it's good but doesn't compare. much prefer books to movies. as for star wars, i was a kid when that came out--that movie was MAGIC!! watching it now (and jaws) the special effects seem a bit cheesy, but it doesn't matter. they are works of art!

can't believe how many on that list i have never seen.

I remember sitting in a meeting with some English teachers. We all had to mention movies that had an effect on us. They mentioned all of the classics, some of which I did not totally get. Time came for me to mention my movie and I stated "One Flew over the Cuckoo..." And they looked at me like what the hell is wrong with you.

I am vindicated. At a much later date.

yeah, but school only lets you read the 'clean' tales...i have a beautiful book at home with all the tales (shame he only got started on several) and some are raunchy! hilarious, and such a sense of humor. love to read them.

matter of fact, it's been a while since i have read them. time for a re-read.

Our school actually let us read the whole book. We really got to cover a lot of literature and movies in regular classwork as supplemental learning.

Speaking of which, I think Gettysburg is one of the most under-rated movies out there.

been there several times. folks took us up there a few times. been to manassas/bull run (depending on north or south as to what it was called) vicksburg, pea ridge... some revolutionary war sites too including yorktown, camden s.c. also jamestown, williamsburg. i love history--hope to go to shiloh and antietam. around christmastime they put up luminaries at antietam--one for every casualty of the battle. they said when you see the #, it's huge--but to see all those lights stretched out, it puts things into perspective.

I am vindicated. At a much later date.

I would certainly rank it among the greats...Jack was outstanding and the movie hit some interesting points concerning human behavior and views...the only complaint I have is the depiction of ECT and lobotomies. ECT is a valuable treatment tool in the battle against severe and chronic depression and the application is humane, the patient given muscle relaxers and anesthetic so there are no violent convulsions and/or injury. Lobotomies are banned in the US but when they were used produced a flat affect but didn't reduce patients to zombies...they were often performed outpatient in a doctors office.
