Not looking forward to tomorrow...

I really didn't want to bring this up here on the forum, but my dad is going in for major surgery to remove a blockage in his small intestine. He had a routine colonoscopy a few weeks ago and they found a blockage. The biopsy showed it was cancerous, but they don't know how far it has spread until the blockage is removed. I've known this for a few weeks, but keep tellling myself that everything is OK. He's 72 year's old and has never really had any health problems. My mom passed away eight year's ago, two months before dad was going to retire. I'm closer to my dad, than I was to mom and sometimes I feel guilty that I wasn't around enough when she was sick. I'm thinking the worst, but I know many people who have had the same cancer and made a complete recovery. Still, I'm scared that it won't go well tomorrow. He also has high blood pressure and they discovered he has a heart mummer, but it won't affect the operation. I've made a lot of friends on this site the past year, if you can; say a prayer for my dad tomorrow. He wants to make it to the Spa meet in a few weeks...I hope he can too! Thanks to all...Mark

HHH stay positive, your Dad needs it right now.

Thoughts and prayers going out to him today.

Danzig 06-27-2007 06:02 AM

best of luck to you and your father, hope everything goes well!

as for your mom, don't feel guilty--you shouldn't feel guilt for something you didn't do. guilt is for those who did something bad, we always think we weren't there enough, even if you're there plenty. i doubt your mother would agree with you!

Just got home...dad made it through the surgery OK, but they did fine spots on his liver, the biospy will tell if he'll need chemo or not. He was very groggy after the surgery, since he had high blood pressure also...they gave him drugs to lower it for the surgery. We can only hope for the best and thanks to all for the well wishes for my pop. It's been a long day, but we made it through!

Good news HHH. Glad he made it through okay. Let's hope the spots on the liver are benign.

Not good news this evening...Dad will have to be opened up tomorrow morning again at 7:30am. The doctors feel that the healing isn't going well and there could be a leak in the small intestine where the surgery was done. He's very weak and has a high temperture. I'm really scared that this could be too much for him. I'm very glad for all the support everyone has given me on this site, I just wish it could be the same at home (but that's another story). I'll try to keep everyone post on how things came out. It's a long road ahead for dad, I just hope he can make it through.

Hang in there HHH. You need to be strong for your Dad. He will feel your strength.

My prayers go out to you and your Dad.

Well, the surgery went as good as expected...they found about 4 liters of fluid around where the incision was made, which was causing his high fever and bloated stomach. Right now, he's in ICU on a ventilator to help him breathe and may come off of it possibly tomorrow if all goes well. It looks a little better than last evening, but the next few days will tell. Thanks to everybody for the well wishes and I'll keep all of you posted. Things can only get better.

He made it through surgery well, that's the start. Good news so far, I'll keep thinking of both of you.

Hickory Hill Hoff 07-08-2007 12:23 AM

Dad is doing much better, mostly likely out of ICU today...his spirits are up and things look better.
Once he's up walking around and can have some sort of liquids & food...I'll feel much better!

HHH: great news, buddy! It's good that you're close to him now!

Yesterday, dad was released from the hospital after being there for 24 days. He will be doing rehab at a local health care facility for at least 10 days if not more. He needs to get his strength back where he can walk again on his own. First, he has to start eating more to build that up. I know he is in good hands there and it's only 20 mins. from my home.
Thanks to ALL with your support the last few weeks, it's made it a much more easier thing to go through knowing that all of YOU have been thinking me and dad. God bless you all!
and hopefully I'll meet many of you at the Spa the next month.
