OT- Peter Gammons.
ESPN's Peter Gammons is undergoing surgery this afternoon for an aneurysm in his brain.
Gammons was stricken earlier today and was taken to a Boston-area hospital. He is expected to be in intensive care for the next 10 to 12 days. It'll be a far less interesting trade deadline if Gammons isn't ready to spread some rumors. Hopefully, a speedy recovery is on the way. Jun. 27 - 6:35 pm et Source: Boston Globe |

He's a top notch reporter with contacts out the wazoo...I wish he was commissioner instead of Bud-light
|
Man, that stinks. I really enjoy hearing what he has to say, because like TG said he has a ****load of contacts in every front office in the league. Hope he is able to fully recover!!
|
And he likes Pearl Jam.
Here's hoping he has a full recovery. |
Peter has so many contacts because he is a 1st rate reporter. Doesnt talk bad about anyone, doesnt reveal his sources and he doesnt just make stuff up. I wish Gammons well, his passion and knowledge of the game is truly special. Gammons, Reynolds and Kruk are just awesome together.

Couldnt agree more Euro. I love them all. Best on any network in any sport.
God bless Peter Gammons and get him through this. We need him, hes great for the sport. |
Peter Gammons knows more about baseball than anyone should know about anything.

Notice I said "loves baseball". I had the pleasure to meet Mr Gammons two summers ago at a Cape Cod League baseball game. The only thing he loves more than baseball, is his wife, Gloria. Sports needs more reporters like Gammons who have an overwhelming passion for the game, dont pull punches and who report fair and accurate. Peter, know you probably wont see this, but I'm praying for you and hope to see you on the Cape sooner rather than later! |

A kid who used to play for the Red Sox came out this week and said everyone there is taking them. WHERE IS THE STEROID STORY ON THE RED SOX from Gammons? |

Read the thread. Prayers for him. Must be a liberal secret agenda otherwise. |
I only watch him on Baseball Tonight and I dont see much of a bias coming through. I am a huge Red Sox fan but also follow many of the other games every night. Gammons is anything but bad for the game. Thats a ridiculous thing to say, especially at a time like this.

Any guy who depends on sources like he does knew what was going on. He just looked the other way. |

Plus I've been reading you for a while. And I have to wonder, if someone doesn't agree with you, do you always charge, that they are biased or gullable, or some other juvenile response? |
I'm a Yankee fan and I love Peter Gammons. It doesn't matter what team you're a fan of now; when I read this on this board, I was shocked. I'm praying that he makes a full recovery.
As for whether he's biased or not, I definitely don't think so (though my Yankee fan bretheren think he is), but I still don't think that a debate on that belongs here. Even if he is biased, so what? The man came close to dying and is not yet out of the woods. |

Yeah, he tells it like it is. He just looked past the steroids story. He kept his mouth shut to keep getting inside info from Scouts, GM's, etc. I like journalist that are honest and dig for stories, not ones who keep quiet in order to get information. |

Young people stupid enough to use steroids have cut out their own destinies. I have trouble feeling sorry for them. They shouldnt depend on a journalist to help save them for whatever comes there way. Cant blame a guy who is just trying to make a living.

I find it funny that you're getting on Peter's case (because he didn't pursue a story hard enough, as if he lacks some moral fiber), at a time when he is seriously ill. Seems like a contradiction to me. |
Well I can see your point to a degree but with everything that has been put out there in the last 10 years on steroids, I hardly blame Peter Gammons for contributing to the young people's steroid use. Any high school athlete that uses steroids isnt worth the piss that comes out of his you know what. Sorry, but its just the truth. It would be like me going home doing and 8 ball of coke and wanting people to feel sorry for me when my heart explodes.

I don't need meds...you do. Plenty have responded to your rants. You need help, Exceller. If anyone disagrees with your narrow mindset, you don't state facts about the topic that you disagree with, just bring out your insults and judgements. btw, nice compassion for a guy that has had brain surgery.... "Give a dog a bone...doesn't let go!" I won't be responding to any more of your threads. It's a waste. DTS |

There was also a mention of him covering for the owners, which in 2000 was the Yawkey Trust, and not the same people who own them now, so that arguement has no weight either. If we are going to harp on the Red Sox steroid scandal, of which there seems to be very little, where was Mike Vaccaro or Mike Lupica to enlighten the world on Jason Giambi or Gary Sheffield? Or any reporter IN ANY CITY covering any team? Where were any of them? To paraphrase Gammons when you go back and look at jackasses like Giambi, Paxton Crawford, Jason Grimsley, Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, the whole bunch of the abusers, it makes you appreciate the raw ability and talent of people like Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Jason Bay, Jonathon Papelbon, ARod, David Ortiz, Manny Ramierz, Jim Thome, all the guys who make baseball great. |
