Anybody ever had a flat iron steak?

A friend of mine told me about them. We grilled out some Sunday after a day of golf. They are a great cut of meat, if marinated and cooked right, they are a poor mans filet migon. We each got about 1 1/2 LBS for around 10 bucks. I don't think it's been around here for very long, but if you like to grill, LOOK INTO THEM!

Grits 04-04-2007 02:19 PM

Whorst, I've not had it, but I've seen it prepared on the Food Network shows. And as you say, its all in the prep.

They are great steaks. Very reasonable priced and have it at least once
a week. I usually marinade with beer, OJ, Spices and some other things
that fall out of the cabinet. Then I usually rub it in a 50/50 mixture of
sugar and montreal steak seasoning then grill to perfection. Then
serve with your fav. sides and nice cold brew. GOOD EATS

Man, your right, but it's not that tough to do. A little mesquite, minced garlic, maybe some seasoning for a couple hours. Cook it mid rare. It's like Buddah! Just to say this, anyone who cooks steak well, well, done cause they are scared of it are lost. It's all about the flavor. How can anyone enjoy meat that's dry. It really boggles me for real. I know a lot of people who really sweat that. Meat is at it's best when it's cooked mid rare to mid, maybe mid well, pending on the thickness of the meat.

SentToStud 04-04-2007 02:34 PM

aka 'top blade.' marinated, it's very tasty. almost as tender as a ribeye but still a hearty taste like a sirloin.

Grits 04-04-2007 02:34 PM

Whorstman, I just did a quick search at www.foodtv.com and got several recipes listed. You may want to take a look.

That sounds good. Montreal steak seasoning is the shiz. I'm the same way, I like to experiment with whatever I have on hand, sometimes you find gold. Grilling to perfection is what it'a all about. That is the exact line I use.

To me it's chemistry in the kitchen, just trying to find the right mix
ingredients for a perfect meal. I also used flat iron steak to make
some homemade beef jerky.

Cajungator26 04-04-2007 02:54 PM

I'm putting saucon on ignore for today... can't handle reading his posts... making me hungry!!! :D Nobody quote him! LMAO

So true, it's 70% in the preparation. Once you have that, all you need to do is cook it the right way. Pay attention, move the meat around and cook it properly and you will impress your friends. That sounds like some good beef jerky too.

It's one of my favorite things to do is to cook. Been doing it since I
was 12 yrs old. Back then I had to cook because both of my parents
worked till 7pm. So somebody had to put food on the table. So
I learned from scratch. Cajun and Creole cooking are my fav.

I'm still attempting to learn how to cook. It's a work in progress, what can I say? Gonna have to find me a guy that can either A.) Cook or B.) Put up with mine. :o

If you can make the sides, baked taters, corn etc. , a guy like me would take care of the rest. Wink!

You never going to learn if you don't try. It's a trial and error, you
will learn from your mistakes. I suck at making bake goods. I
constantly burn them or dry them out. See you all later off to
baseball practice.

ddthetide 04-04-2007 04:19 PM

try them blackened too ! VERY good!!

Downthestretch55 04-04-2007 04:41 PM

Here's a site where I get plenty of good recipes. Rubs, sauces...lots of good ones.
