Top 5 Derby horses at this point

Just want everyones opinion on their personal top 5 as of now for the derby, along with 5 sleepers each, i know its early i just want to get a look at what everyone is thinking, you dont have to put them in order just throw out names....

top 5.... nobizlikeshowbiz, street sense, ravel, great hunter, hard spun

sleepers.....air commander, law breaker, rags to riches, liquidity, summer doldrums

miraja2 03-17-2007 10:33 PM

How come Notional barely ever seems to get mentioned in any of these top 5 lists? He has looked solid in his last two stakes races, and people seem to forget that it did not look like CQ was going to get to him in the Risen Star even without the trouble. His sire was a G1 winner going 10f, so I wouldn't think pedigree would be the big knock on him.
Anyway, here is my Top 5 right now....in order.
1) Great Hunter
2) Street Sense
3) Ravel
4) Notional
5) Circular Quay

Hard Spun in your top 5? I don't see that one at all.

1) Street Sense
2) Scat Daddy
3) Great Hunter
4) Curlin
5) Any Given Saturday

Super sleeper- Grapelli... With a full field and a hot pace, this guy could make a run for it..Although his entrance into the derby seems unlikely due to graded earnings, I really believe this horse has a big upside.

Grits 03-17-2007 10:57 PM

By tomorrow at 6pm. ArlJim will have 42 combinations worked out with his top five.

I should be so wise to start early.

haha, I said I start 2-3 weeks out thinking about the field and how I might attack it.

Tomorrow is too early even for me.

it was either him or Notional and i just think that hard spun will be ok, he had 1 bad race as they all do, but i really do think he will bounce back, notional is a close 6th on my list, i did not put him on sleepers because he is not a sleeper he has won 2 stakes races in a row now

Sam!! I like this horse as well... I saw him win on closing day at CD this past November. He just seems like a scrappy, versatile horse. One of those types that if he can't win it you can at least put him underneath. But, I do think the way he is progressing he might peak in a little over a month, get a good trip and be a derby winner.

With the way he runs, I love that he's going to the Illinois Derby too.

He seems to be one of those horse who just can't quite seem to get the job done, but grinds and grinds, a style that can be effective in the Derby.

Hmmmm, grinds. Can't get the job done in preps. Still will get enough earnings to get in.

Giacomo Redux?! :D

mclem10011 03-18-2007 09:11 AM

I still find it hard to narrow, but......

1. Street Sense
2. Circular Quay
3. Great Hunter
4. Nobiz Like Shobiz
5. Notional
Sleepers in no particular order
Zanjero, Hard Spun, Adore The Gold, Any Given Saturday, Rags to Riches
Extremely hard to narrow down, i could throw 10 more in there easy! More preps to come, jockey decisions, of course the possibility of injuries (hope not), lots of intrigue still to play itself out in the next 6 weeks! Love this time of year!:)

Samarta 03-18-2007 09:14 AM

Nobiz
Great Hunter
Scat Daddy
Circular Quay

Cajungator26 03-18-2007 10:56 AM

1.) Scat Daddy
2.) Hard Spun
3.) Ketchikan
4.) Any Given Saturday
5.) Zanjero

Some others I like:

Street Sense
Stormello
Bwana Bull
Liquidity
Nobiz Like Shobiz

Still too far away to determine... ;)

Yeah, it is fun. Keeps me entertained. :)

Speaking of entertainment... the future 2007 NCAA champs will be playing Purdue at 2:15. Haha :D

Wow! Liquidity was really kicked to the curb.

Yeah... he ran a horrible race in the LA derby. Not what I was expecting... and while I can forgive a loss by a few lengths, it's tough to toss out a loss by way more than that.

Don't mess with the Ducks, dude.

Pedigree Ann 03-18-2007 11:51 AM

Great Hunter
Circular Quay
Street Sense
Any Given Saturday
Notional

The first three were the top of the 2yos last year and have come back as good as or better than they were last year. This isn't an Action This Day/Minister Eric bunch folks. AGS ran a good one vs. SS, got a a couple lbs. but had to go wide, while SS found a rail trip. Notional is the forgotten horse, but with two solid wins at 3 he can't be ignored. Gee, I wish Tiz Wonderful hadn't gotten hurt.

Go 'Cats!! Go Big Blue!! Beat Kansas!! (yes, I know)

Rileyoriley 03-18-2007 01:21 PM

Any Given Saturday
Circular Quay
Stormello
NoBiz
Street Sense

The first 3 have shown they can battle. Street Sense too however I'd like to see what he can do if he doesn't get the rail trip. NoBiz is talented and I thought he looked like he got back into it when Scat Daddy came up on his outside. I just wonder if he's a late blooming 3 year old like his sire.

The sleeper will be the one I didn't bet on Derby Day!:p

kentuckyrosesinmay 03-18-2007 01:29 PM

Pletcher said that he most likely won't run Rags to Riches against the boys when she won last out at Santa Anita. Smart move IMO.

smartyalex 03-18-2007 04:37 PM

1. C.Q
2. Street Sense
3. Curlin
4. A.G.S.
5. Officer Rocket

POINTGIVEN1985 03-18-2007 05:39 PM

i have a super sleeper, but i have no clue where he is ? or if hes still pointing to the bluegrass, his name is belgravia i could see him sitting back making 1 big run in the derby and getting a peice, thats if he's still even pointing there

kentuckyrosesinmay 03-18-2007 06:21 PM

Oh, I love Belgravia! But, I don't think he will have a shot in the Derby at this point if he even gets there, which I highly doubt that he will. He was sick in his last start which explained why he ran fourth that day...

I wonder what happened to Dilemma as well...

he worked 4 in 48 @ Keeneland yesterday...I thought I read somewhere that they were going to try to get him to the Lane's End but I may be thinking of another horse

POINTGIVEN1985 03-18-2007 06:46 PM

i read that he was going bluegrass then derby which is crazy, but im sure biancone will do it, if anyone knows if this is correct please post, i guess it would explain him working at keenland
