how stupid does that sound? why is the braintrust so hard up for a sponsor? The more i see it in print and on the internet it enrages me

No they don't race the day afterwards and Live! on 4th or 5th (can't recall which it is) Street is really fun.

You didn't just realize these guys were the sponsor now compared to last year you hope. I'm not totally sure about this, but I'm pretty sure after Visa didn't renew their Sponsorship of the Triple Crown (thanks Smarty lol jk) 2 years ago, the Triple Crown and the KY Derby itself didn't have a sponsor for awhiole after that. Where Yum! Brands is messing up, is if they are the parent company of KFC and some other major brands, they should pick a major brand, and market that alone as the sponsor. And maybe if they have more than KFC, use KFC for the Derby, Taco Bell for the Preakness, and Poizaa Hut for the Belmont or somethin somethin bla bla bla bla bla

who cares who is a sponsor or what is being sponsored. it it still the ky derby no matter what. if you cant get by the sponsor then you are focusing on the wrong thing when it comes to the derby.

i prefer the bars on baxter more than the ones on 4th street live. the derby museum is a must. molly malones is awesome, o'malleys on 2nd street is fun as well. always plenty to do during derby week in louisville.

Im surprised Emirates didn't make a move to sponsor it. They seem to be sponsoring everything these days and are favourites to sponsor the Epsom Derby when Vodafone's spell runs out this year!

Something thats actually kind of funny, or sad, about this is that Yum! is actually having problems with their stock plunging right now. Between the e.coli in all the Taco Bells (don't remember where) and the rat infestation in one of their KFC/Taco Bells in NY, they're not doing too well.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm not sure I'd want the Derby associated with disease and infestations. But, hey, that's just me!

The publicity is getting worse. The West Village(NYC) KFC was closed today because of rats! Yes, I said RATS! The tape shows it all. KFC is despicable anyway.:(

sponsers bring in all kinds of money. just like in other sports with naming rights of stadiums and tracks.

Here is a sickening deja vu. In the 1970's I lived in a suburb of Newark, NJ. There was a KFC a few miles from me. I never ate there, but I remember it being closed because a customer bit into a fried piece of rat!!!!

I think someone on this board lives in the town the rats were running wild does he not?

I know the area well. If you go upstream on the Hackensack River (which empties into Newark bay), or up Overpeck Creek, also a tributary, there are plenty of rats..all over the place. It's near Meadowlands. Used to be Bergen
county's "sanitary land fill".
Seems to me that Manhatten has a very big problem as well.
All along the Hudson (in the rocks, under the piers), these nasty critters will be found.
I honestly don't have a good solution, other than keeping garbage in cans with bungies on top. Even with that, they are mighty tough to get rid of.
Wherever ships tie up, Norway rats come up and down the ropes.
I just hope they don't carry bubonic plague fleas.
This is a huge problem that needs serious attention from the public health department. Both NY and NJ.
Lots of people live in this area...and many don't even realize what critters are sharing their homes, backyards, and eateries.

Two of my best friends deliver chips for Frito-Lay, which is one of the Yum brands. Everytime they see this kind of thing, they just shake their heads and say, "There goes our pension funds . . ."

I wonder if anybody has actually determined if such sponsorships really generate profits for the companies themselves. I understand that the companies get more exposure as a result of all the ads that are placed during the event, but seriously, have you ever bought Taco Bell because the Kentucky Derby is sponsored by Yum Brands? Did you ever buy more Tostitos because they sponsor the Fiesta Bowl? And did you buy tons of Enron stock because the Astros' field was named after it? (God help you if you did! ;) ) Are the companies really getting the bang for the buck?

companies say they are. just like in nascar just look at all that money they are spending just to sponser a car or race. i would like to see them spend their money in horse racing. but need a bigger fan base. for that to happen.

Just as long as it doesn't become too much like nascar. I would hate to see a dead heat between the Bud horse and the Home Depot horse . . .

I didn't live near the Hackensack River, but I was relatively close to a few other rivers. Now I live near the Delaware in the boondocks where I see many crittters, but not rats.

Come on now, you know darn well that the AFLAC mare would beat both of those horses.

I live at the headwaters of the Delaware River.
Plenty of critters here, but thankfully, not rats.
The story about the KFC/Taco Bell in the west village is worldwide.
I think I'll stay in the "boondocks" for a while...until the mongoose show up to solve the problem.

I live on the NJ side of the Delaware Water Gap. The critters I see are deer, foxes, chipmonks, and other cuties. I left civilization twenty-two years ago; it was so that my husband and I could live in peace with a menagerie. My husband trains dogs and we both are involved in dog breeding. No one bothers us here. Our old Appaloosa, spent most of his life in this placid environment. I think that is why he lived to be 29! You and I are neighbors, both living near the beautiful Delaware.:)

Up here we have similar critters. The Delaware (west branch) is about 200 feet from my house. You could jump across it. It's loaded with trout, both browns and brookies.
The Susquehanna starts about a half mile from here, just over the ridge.
And another tributary, about a mile away, flows to the Hudson.
Living at the beginnings of three river systems is very nice.
Seems that everything else is "downstream".
This summer, I might pack my camping gear in my canoe and go from the top of the Delaware all the way to Delaware Bay. Might be a journey to remember.

I heard they were going to have UB40 sing Rats in the Kitchen instead of My old Kentucky Home this year :rolleyes:

i think the advertising pays off. i bought citgo gas because they are big supporters of horse racing, til i found out they were a branch of the venezuelan govt. now i don't go there.
and nascar was mentioned--many of the fans are rabid about buying from nascar sponsors. yeah, it works. that's why they pay the bucks to put their name up there.

i saw about the rats, disgusting and very disturbing. hell, they said the place was cited for rat droppings--how the heck did they think the droppings got there, the rat dropping fairy?? duh, they had to know that rats were around if the evidence was there.

Check out New Hope, PA(Bucks County)and Lambertville, NJ(Hunterdon County); they are neighbors across from each other on the banks of the Delaware.

For several years, the first two classics of the English season, the Guineas races at Newmarket, were sponsored by an insurance company with an infelicitous name. How would you like the "General Accident Kentucky Derby?"

The REAL Derby was sponsored by a battery company for a while - and somehow the 'Eveready Derby' didn't sound so bad.
