GP successfully lures Uncle Mo to Timely Writer

Gulfstream Park racing secretary Dan Bork has written a one-mile overnight handicap for 3-year-olds to be run here March 12th. The race, called the Timely Writer, will offer a $100,000 purse and will carry no conditions, which makes it open to all 3-year-olds, including reigning division leader and Eclipse Award champion Uncle Mo.

March 12 also is the date of the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs.

“We were looking to put up a prep race for 3-year-olds who have already earned enough graded points to get into the Kentucky Derby but might not have wanted a race as tough as the Fountain of Youth at this point of the winter,” said Tim Ritvo, vice president of racing at Gulfstream Park. “We are also looking at this race as a possible alternative for 3-year-olds not quite ready for the Fountain of Youth who needed a little later prep to make the Florida Derby.”

The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth will be run Feb. 26, with the Grade 1 Florida Derby on April 3, 22 days after the Timely Writer.

They should just give them a million and have fluffers in the Winners Circle for him.

For Uncle Mo or Repole?

How about installing a 1 1/16 Mile chute?

Linny 02-16-2011 03:13 PM

The don't even have enough room back there for a run up to the timing device.

NTamm1215 02-16-2011 03:14 PM

NE 213th St. precludes them from having a chute longer than a mile. When Stronach re-designed GP he initially planned on the chute only going back to 7.5 furlongs. Wouldn't that have been terrific?

You and I both know that not being able to run anything between 7.5 and 9fs when you're a winter-time track with tons of 3YOs would be very problematic. Bad enough they can't go 1 1/16th now.

Nice idea but not sure how many trainers are dying to run there horses in a race that has NO Derby meaning.

Other than Mo,Gourmet Dinner,THAS,Soldat and Dialed In right now all others need Graded Earnings.

I would rather take my chance in the FOY and make cash then race in new race then have to send my horse to a polytrack and hope he runs good

I'd watch that.

There is no room, but they should have an alternate finish line. That would work

The stretch would be about 568 feet, or roughly 100 feet less than Delta if they did that.

randallscott35 02-16-2011 03:39 PM

I thought he was going to Tampa

Alan07 02-16-2011 03:42 PM

I was talking within the line of the old Laurel/Tampa chutes.

Is it possible those 2 go in this spot for 100k? That would be fun to watch.
