Its fine for people who will be dead within the next 27 years.. but that is a very short amount of time.

The tweaking needs to be made where instead of contributing 6.2% of your salary to a national pie, where the pol's generously eat out of whenever they feel like it.. you should be able to put that 6.2% directly into your 401k if you choose.

You know, I used to think that, too, 25 years ago. I was angry about the gov taking out SS. But watching what happened to my savings/investments in the last five years, I'm damn glad it wasn't. Timing is everything.

But SS was started (for widows and orphans as the Prez just said in his pressor) because folks got old and had no money. It's the fallback, last chance, minimal to keep you from homelessness and starvation. It still is, it shouldn't be anybody's main retirement plan.
