I hated Jet, I always played against him and he always made those loose leads in slow paces.

I'm wrong...I was thinking 1993.

Chavez. He always got away with murder on the lead and I always swore and ripped up tickets. Picou trained him.

But he did lose the award didn't he?
I can't recall who but I seem to remember him running in some late year race at Calder maybe the McKnight? trying to win the eclipse award.

It wasnt THAT bad...

In those races he beat horses like Flag Down, Mecke, Awad, Marlin, Raintrap, Dernier Empereur.

If it wasnt for a bad ride in the Caesar's Inernational that year he would have won that too...

LOL!!! I disagree!! yeah thats it, that was teh year. I thought those horses were brutal. I think I tried Marlin to beat him a couple of times and he never could. WHo won the Caesars that year?

blackthroatedwind 12-21-2006 09:39 AM

Bad ride? Well....Chavez rode him.

Singspeil won that year...even though he lost the BC turf to Pilsudski.

Gander 12-21-2006 09:41 AM

I miss those horses. A lot better than what we have seen here on turf recently.

singspiel won an eclipse? man, I never would got that question right. If he didnt win the BC, and he didnt win the races we named, what the hell did he win to get the award?

No argument from me. They were certainly no worse than English Channel and Cacique.

I miss good horses like Star of Cozzene.

The Canadian International.

He was lengths better than Diplomatic Jet but his US accomplishments were minimal.

Sandpit...

You really think Awad and Mecke were brutal?

Actually Chavez was supposed to ride him that day... but there was some issue with the helicopter and the jocks from Belmont couldnt make it to Atlantic City. Dale Lynch ended up riding Diplomatic Jet..

I like to think of him as Shmecke.

They only seemed bad as we were coming off some genuinely good horses. Compared to the dreck we see nowadays they were very good. We live in a world where people actually think English Channel is really good. 20 years ago he would have been lucky to have hit the board in a good turf stake.

Gander 12-21-2006 09:46 AM

I made one of the bigger bets of my life on Sandpit in the Arlington Million the year Marlin wired the field. Pretty sure he ran 2nd. I bet Sandpit to win at around 4/1.

Well not brutal, but I guess I never had much luck with any of those horses.
You know how some years you just have a division figured out and do well betting the particular races on that division and some years you just always miss?
That was one of the years I ALWAYS missed. I don't think I cashed a ticket on a grade one grass race that year.

Are you impressed at all with Showing Up? (excuse my stupid questions, I didn't follow racing when the horses mentioned above raced)

Gander 12-21-2006 09:47 AM

I had a lot of luck with a horse called Flag Down.

Holy **** now I remember the race. The atlantic city guys all got mounts because the copter coming from Belmont didn't make it. I think Sandpit won because his jock was already there having flown in straight from cali earlier and he was riding against guys hwo usually rode 3 claimers.

Oracle

Bob Beinish wishes you all the best during the holidays.

For those of you who don't know who Bob is...he's the man who gave Mikey his nickname. He's also the only socially acceptable person to work for Ragozin.

His punishment? He sits next to me at work.
