one thing i've learned about ss....

who here knows how long you must work to qualify for full retirement benefits from ss?

you have to earn 40 credits, and you can earn four a year. so, after a glorious ten year run, you qualify for full bennies. medicare, full ss...after TEN years. that is the first change needed on ss reform. you could graduate, work ten years on the books-and guess what you didn't pay enough to get, but you're going to get anyway?? that my friends is ridiculous.

Too bad the whole country can't be run like New Hampshire. They have no career politicians because they pay their politicians a huge $100 a year and that number isn't missing any zero's.
Their schools are always rated in the top 3. Their roads are in great shape and in the winter they are always plowed. The town I used to live in even picked up your trash for free.
But the best thing about NH is they do all this with NO income tax and NO sales tax.
You ask yourself how can they do this and the answer is they are mainly a population of hard working AMERICANS that aren't just looking at handouts because they don't give out many handouts. That might explain why there are so few (RACIST WARNING) illegal aliens and minorities.
In closing i will say that it's not a Republican state or a Democatic state. It's just a state where people work together to make a good life for themselves and their children. Wish I still lived there and not in this piece of crap state they call New York.

I didn't think so (but you may be right). Your monthly benefits are pro-rated based upon your lifetime contributions, is my understanding. At least that's what the little paper social security sends me once a year says. Got a link or something?

Well, I think it's more likely because they are a population of only just over a million people, rather than 330 million people, and on a very tiny bit of land at only 2000 square miles. It's quite a bit easier to manage.

We have something like $300 million in bills due Aug 2, and $200 mil in cash (exact amts have been in the press, but that's the rough ratio) That amount varies, of course, depending upon who pays their taxes daily, etc.

So yeah - there's no cash to pay something on that date (although there's probably a week of additional wiggling). You pick who. The Government paychecks, Social Security, tax refunds, military pay, businesses who contract with the government, etc.

We hit the debt ceiling some months back. The Treasury has been "wiggling" ever since. It is beyond absurd that a routine, one-sentence raise isn't being done, and that this country is being held hostage for future spending by refusing to pay past bills already owed.

That is nearly 3 trillion owed to the treasury by the Govt. Yes they spent it on something else. There are many trillions of $$ of national debt that are excluded from the official count. It is actually a lot worse than 14+ trillion.

Yes. But none of the above has anything to do with the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling is just cash flow to pay bills we already owe. It has nothing to do with calculating future spending, or in how big the deficit can become. The GOP already increased the deficit 800 billion this congress, earlier in the year. There will be 2 additional debt raises just for that in the future (calculated, based upon interest accumulated, etc)

National Debt $14 trillion

3.6 trillion - Social Security trust fund owed

4.0 trillion - Bush, W. policies (unfunded wars, unfunded Rx givaway)
3.0 trillion - Bush, W. unfunded tax cuts

2.0 trillion - taxes (income) lost due to recession and housing bust
1.4 trillion - Obama policies

My only point with New Hampshire was with hard work and PRIDE this country can get back to what it was before so many people were looking for a handout.

Because if people paid a bit more attention over the past 50 years, we'd never have gotten here.

Based on that theory there would not be a democrat ever elected to any public office in this country.

It is the teabaggers that are currently domestic terrorists who are willing to destroy our economy to prove their point under the guise of being patriots. Bin Ladens goal was to destroy our economy and he couldn't but these great American Patriots just may succeed. They have succeeded in one thing I never would have thought possible. I am now on the fence as to whether I vote for Obama.

ELL OH ELL. So you're all for business as usual? Default is coming now or later. Stop watching MSNBC.

Who the hell is looking for a handout? Social Security and Medicare are not "handouts", we pay into that!

Coach Pants 07-29-2011 01:26 PM

I believe you're paying in about 25% of the actual cost of Medicare.

My reference was to the uninformed voter not necessarily the mis-informed. It is looking more and more likely I will abstain or 3rd party vote again this election. Though it is looking more and more like O might not even get the nomination, if it keeps going the way it is. Long way to go.

I strongly suggest you objectively look at the financial policies that each party actually practiced when in office since 1960.
