I'm elated for everyone involved. I just watched the replay, she was full of run, for sure..GREAT JOB in every facet..Couldn't be happier for you guys and gals...As impressive as it was, it has raised some questions..Like, what to do next?? What level?? The braintrust of this operation will surely make the right moves...Congrats again.

It seemed to me the track was playing pretty fast yesterday. She wasn't forced at all by Martinez running those fractions. She handled those fractions just fine. If she finished 10 lengths back setting those fractions I think you'd have a point. I can't be too critical of that ride...she got an easy lead and seemed relaxed to me. That's pretty much what you want form a horse with some natural speed in her.

Maybe I am wrong, I don't know, but I just think Martinez could have milked it a little better in the 2nd quarter, she has learned alot recently, and what is great about it is that she is actually taking what she has learned in the morning and applying it to the afternoon. It is all too common for some horses to be morning glories.....

However, for reading a couple of things in this thread, I am going to give you the best advice I can as an owner. You found where she fits. Run her back there. If you lose her, you make money. You got into a claiming horse. You knew what she was when you bought her. Don't pick her races with your heart, pick them with your head (and perhaps your Accountant). She was just bought at auction for about $20k less than the tag, so someone would have to be in love with her far more than you all are to take her from this level.

The goal isn't to make money with this horse so all conventional owning decisions don't really apply here. The goal is for us to be able to enjoy owning a race horse while making sure Chuck makes some money for the work he's put in. So this isn't a horse we want to get claimed which means we need to be less practical with the spots we put her in.

Then you will be disappointed more often than not. As far as owning a horse there is nothing as fun as having your picture taken. Finishing fifth is an allowance race isn't going to be nearly as fun as winning a claiming race. If that was really the goal then it might have made sense to try and find a cheap race at a bad track first off the layoff so you could be starter eligible. Doubt she would have been taken if she were bought for $30k and then dropped in for $10k off the layoff. Anyway, good luck!

Good post. I agree for the most part. Watching her have a chance to win yesterday was a heckuva lot more fun than watching her finish last 20 lengths out her last time out. I do think there was more to it than the competition last time. It was her first race with Chuck and his staff...first on turf and first off a 3 month layoff. I think they'll pick and choose properly for her.

I think Chuck will run her back at $50k, and if she gets claimed....well, that's the name of the game. And the partnership (Chuck included) will have made a good profit and hopefully use it to upgrade or do more of the same. I'd be VERY pleased if my first foray in horse ownership ended up being the horse getting claimed for double what the partnership paid for it. Horse racing is a business... and should be treated as such, even though the main objective here is to enjoy the experience. If one can enjoy the experience AND make some money, I'd call that success.

Well I haven't been disappointed by her yet and that includes finishing last in one race. I would get less enjoyment out of winning a $30K claimer and losing the horse than running fifth in an open allowance race. I didn't get in this partnership for the money. I went in fully expecting to not get back anything I put in and have no regrets about that. As long as I am realistic about her chances in every race (which I have been) then she only has to run to her ability and I won't go home disappointed even if that is last place in a tough turf allowance when she gets caught up in a hot pace.

Watching Sumwon yesterday was a great thrill. Congrats to Chuck and Steve and all the partners. Definitely worth the 500. I cant wait for Saratoga.
