So true, but don't be so hard on Lesley.....he's trying to do the right thing and only needs for Saban to be caught over singing.

The sad part about this stupid system is that if you switched the two games around, if Bama had dominated the first one 21-0 and LSU had snuck by 9-6 in overtime Monday, the Tigers would be champs now. I'm to the point now where I'd rather go back to what we had prior to the BCS if they are not going to have a playoff.

I'm not sure that is true. I think it would have been a split vote and the debate for a playoff would have really intensified.

There is no way there would be a rematch if the regular season game was 21-0. Ok St. would have been in the game at that point. The outcry would be loud and clear from the public (as well as the voters) that wouldn't want to see a rematch of a 21-0 game.

Never even gave that premise a thought. My thinking was that if Bama spanked them 21-0 at home the first time and then lost a 9-6 game in where they missed 4 fg's, the voters wouldn't have had LSU as the clear cut champions.

I think it would have been had Bama won the first game. I don't think LSU would have fallen below second.

If it was 21-0 as the scenario was presented, no way there is a rematch.

i agree. the loser would have fallen to far, for things to work out right and them climb back in it.
just remember this year wasn't Bama's fault. the system worked in their favor. everyone in front of them lost AFTER Bama lost.

If LSU had played that poorly in a regular season game they would have dropped 4 or 5 spots. Alabama's defense was really impressive but only the biggest SEC homers could excuse that showing.

The idea that the system "worked" is like crowing after finishing 3rd and 4th in a race and having a double DQ move you up. The BCS simply got lucky that a plane crashed.

And THAT is the real issue here. When you lose is more important than anything. How long till teams start stacking games so that thetough ones are early and last few games of the year are cupcakes? With so many out of conference rivalries ending are we looking forward to Texas versus North Texas or Texas A&M versus Sam Houston State on Thanksgiving night? Isn't it bad enough that 25% of Alabama's schedule is cupcakes (Kent state, N Texas and Ga Southern-who incidentally scored the most points against them all year lol)

And I dont mean to pick on Alabama but like Darren said they were lucky to benefit from the system AND I'm pretty sure that they are the best team in the country. In a playoff system they wouldnt be penalized for a kicker having a bad day (Boise too) and would have an opportunity to win the thing on the field and get the props that they deserve. Instead of talking about this crap we would be talking about the unbelievable defense. Take a cupcake off the schedule, play the other crappy bowls (the idea that a 4 or 8 team playoff would make the other bowls more meaningless than they already are is stupid), figure out a way to work around the NFL playoffs and rake in the money.

They can Play Friday Night/Sat day/night in December and have the championship after New Years. Use the Bowl Games as the Sites for the playoff game. I don't understand who thinks a playoff system is bad.

Danzig 01-12-2012 03:34 PM

it's not that anyone thinks it's bad. it's the money. if the money was to equal to what's getting thrown at schools now, it would change in a heart beat. until that happens, playoff won't happen.

also there are still questions about how to figure out who gets in the playoffs. good teams could get left out and bad ones in if they go with conference winners. under that scenario, alabama wouldn't have made a playoff this year.

otoh,go by rankings, you have conferences with no representation at all. right now bcs rules prohibit having multiple bcs bowls with teams from one conference. that's why arkansas didn't get a bcs bowl this year-two teams from the sec were already going.

so-do they want the best teams, or go by division winners? either way, some teams will get left out, some will get in who 'don't deserve it'. so, still not exactly 'fair'. if you go by rankings, you still have people voting to help control their opponent, or their own ranking. saban voted okla state lower than anyone else place them, which helped his team remain in second by a razor-thin margin. ok st coach gundy didn't even have a vote.

A playoff will bring in far more money than the current system. It isnt even really debatable. The problem is a few people currently are calling all the shots and people hate to concede power. There is no perfect system but one where the 8 best teams make it in regardless of affiliation is a start. If you want to use some sort of a poll and computer mix you could start by using a far better and more transparent computer system and polling system. This is so simple on the surface. Sure you have contracts to deal with and will probably have to still tie in the big bowls as sites but it can be done. The BS about the coaches liking the bowl system is ridiclous. And I still dont know why if there is a playoff the other **** bowls cant still be played? What really changes is the BCS bowls are simply what they should be, steps to the final destination. Seriously if you make the Fiesta, Orange, Cotton and Gator/ Capital One Bowl/Chick fil-a bowl the 1st round, The Sugar and Rose bowls the 2nd round the the NC game the college Super Bowl what is the problem?

my thinking is if the money is to be had by changing, it would happen. a lot of programs fund a lot of college stuff outside of football. more money would be a good thing for those schools.
i also have to think that some conferences wouldn't want it to be the best teams go. currently you have conferences with guaranteed spots in the big bowls. they don't want that to go away-that makes that big money go away- from them. look at the last few years, and what teams have finished in the top ten. look at who hasn't been the last however many years. there's been a shift, and it's leaving traditional schools out in the cold. that's why they made that push for automatic bids, so that no big conference loses out on that money. i don't think they want that auto bid to go away. if it doesn't go away, the playoff system wouldn't be any better than what we have currently.

i can see a plus one coming...that's about it. still think this year that it would have resulted in bama-lsu.

boise st was griping about automatic bids. i bet that griping doesn't happen next year, when they win one of those auto bid conferences!

The problem is the current powers that be would rather take a bigger cut from a smaller pie and it is hard to believe that many of them arent making money personally from this set up. Regardless of what angle you take the thing that continues to come through is that this setup allows for far too much corruption and leaves far too much to chance. But we are going to see changes not because we all bitch but because no one watched the Orange or Sugar bowls and the Championship game's ratings were down as well. Bowl attendance was down this year as average bowl attendance hit a 33 year low. The BCS games tv ratings were down 21% from 2009 partly because of moving to ESPN from Fox but they were down 10% from last year.

i heard on espn radio a VERY interesting inside to the BCS meetings the other day. 5-6yrs ago SEC President Slive presented the "plus 1" format which would pit #1 against #4 and #2 against #3. the big10 and pac10 were firmly against it at that time. well guess who's crying the blues? and now they think it's just the GREATEST idea! yup the big10-pac10 are now all in favor and pushing for the plus 1 system BUT it can't take affect until 2014.

Maybe some day you will find out the benefits of soap and the broader problems of mankind rather than your BigTen fixation, Johnny Reb.

I think 4 teams is too few,I believe 8 teams is the right mix and would only require 3 games. Play 2nd 3rd week of Dec take a week off and then play the final.
