hrfan 09-24-2008 07:16 AM

Yeah you're right. I actually forgot about him in the KingBish that year. For some reason, I only really remember him on the Belmont turf in '98.

And while we are in the business of deconstructing the theroy I was trumpeting earlier, we could mention that Smile was a multiple-stakes winner at age 2. So basically, I might just be completely wrong.

He is hopeless.

Yes I'm sure. I use actual published results, not some whispers in the crowd eminated from the lemonade girl at Saratoga.

His only other starter in NY before the big price Lukas/Luzzi was Smarty Marty, who just isn't very good and was in way over her head. So he's 2 for 3 debuting in NY.

Also, who gives a schitt what they sell for at the sales at this point, other than justifying a yet-another ridiculous stud fee? I don't.

Sure, not all star horses will make star sires and vice versa, but calling Smarty a flop (even if it is qualified by the "To date"), is pushing it a bit. We're talking 6 months of results.

I was wondering why this thread had over 50 replies.

pg1985. I shoulda known.

Maybe he'll start going southern hemisphere and rocking them down under

He's standing for a stud fee of $100,000 and is 36th on the freshman sire list. There is only one horse behind him with more than a $15,000 fee (Strong Hope). People don't pay $100,000 for horses that might develop later so in that regard he's a flop "to date". He still could turn out to be an ok stallion but it's incredibly doubtful he's a $100,000 stallion.

Nobody paid 100k to breed to him.. Haven't we heard the "to date" argument about Point Given?

Merlinsky 09-24-2008 05:50 PM

I skimmed the thread and didn't see this but if it was mentioned, sorry. Turns out Go Smarty Go fractured a cannon bone and will be on the shelf til next year. The trainer's optimistic that he'll be something nice in 2009.

They dont? Of the top 25 sires of 2 year olds, zero stand for 100k or more. Outside of Unbridled Song and Forestry there are really no sires known for early runners standing for 100k or more.

:( That's a shame.

From MaidenWatch at Blood-Horse.com

Update on Go Smarty Go

Go Smarty Go (Smarty Jones - Sarah's World by Holy Bull), who was pulled up after winning a maiden race on the turf on September 21, suffered a condylar fracture in his left front. He had surgery and the prognosis is good, but he is unlikely to race again.

OK but Kingmambo and Awesome Again are the only six figure sires with less 2yo earnings than Smarty Jones and Kingmambo has 16 2yos.
