I don't know, didn't Formal Gold get waxed in Dubai back in like '97, then come back to the states to run several supremely fast races? I think the Dubai effect is somewhat overestimated, particularly with a horse who has, in general, shipped as well as Curlin has.

disappointment. Nice race by the place horse.

The Runner: Why would he keep going with that all over him? Is it
possible that's a case of a shart gone wild?

I don't mean to keep beating the drums for Cigar, but some of the fields Cigar beat while toting a substantial more weight than his opponents, would have drowned Wanderin, Pass, and Ap arrow that ran in The Woodward. Fickle aren't we when we criticize horses and their competition? Or are we just aching to call any horse so we can latch onto to call great these days...

I think this is most likely the case.

Cigar gave weight to all his opponents in exactly one Grade 1 race.

Off the top of my head, he gave a substantial amount of weight at Suffolk downs. Now in all honesty I do recall that field as not being overwhelming, but my memory and I use the word memory believes that field wasn't any tougher than what Curlin faced this Sat while toting equal weight, and Cigar won that day with plenty in the tank.

I'm almost certain Cigar gave weight to Skip Away when Cigar lost.

letswastemoney 09-02-2008 03:25 PM

Oh you guys mean the whole field, nevermind

Cigar's past performances. Just to clarify it was 3 grades 1 win's he toted highweight, not including the Citation challenge and the Mass Handicap where he carried 130lbs during the streak. His last 13 races he carried anywhere between 124lbs to 130lbs.

Which three races?

The Pimlico Special, The Hollywood Gold Cup, and The Donn Handicap.

SentToStud 09-02-2008 04:06 PM

You're right about the Pim Special; he gave a pound to a couple. In the Hollywood, do you remember what Best Pal carried?

You got me there, I don't remember how much weight Best Pal carried that day, I do know on Cigar's website it quoted him as highweight..he wasn't a factor that day, the fun thing about this topic is viewing some of these races again on youtube. That Hollywood Gold Cup was one of the more memorable one's I recall, contrast that to today and you say racing was great then.
