I just went back and did a little research here is the old track records at SA when it was a dirt course.

6f-107.1
6 1/2f-113.3
7f-120 flat
1 1/16th 139 flat
1 1/8-145.4

So in ernest the only race that went faster than any of the previous dirt records were the filly and mare sprint and to be exact it was .10 faster.

SO to me to say the day was a joke just because the track was to fast is completely out there. I really think the times would have been very comparible if the races would have been on the old SA dirt track

Here's a thought the old Dirt track record for a 1 1/4 was 157.4 set by the great Spectacular Bid now do you think the classic tomorrow will be Over or Under the old track record Mark.

My self I say they go slower

slower, but it will be better then 2:00, but that happened from time to time with good horses.

time is never irrelevant unless you are winning with a slow time (then you call it irrelevant)

the turf is usually fast because of dry weather

The sprint and Ladies classic and 2 yo fillies were hardly unformful. They were all won by logical horses with logical horses behind.

your argument would hold more water if they had been set by fillies on the same day.

dellinger63 10-24-2008 08:35 PM

not sure of that but let's see 6F

dellinger63 10-24-2008 08:36 PM

water the track

Those old records also were set over the course of many years. Not all in one day. Look at the BC days at SA in the past:

1986
J-143 4/5
JF-143 1/5
S-108 2/5
D-201 1/5 (10f)
C-200 2/5

1993
J-142.99
JF-143.08
S-108.76
D-148.35
C-200.83

2003
J-143.62
JF-142.75
S-107.95
D-149.17
C-159.88

So you see that in the F/M Sprint, they went the 6f split today faster than all three previous BC finals times for the boys. You see that Stardom Bound went 1.76 seconds faster than every J or JF winner. You see that Zenyatta went 1.5 seconds faster than the next best Distaff winner. Now, to be fair, it's quite possible that Stardom Bound and Zenyatta could turn out to be all-time horses or at least better than the horses that ran those previous BC times. But it's more likely that the track was playing faster than it ever has than those horses all happened to run exceptionally fast horses all on the same day.

I am just wondering why you are comparing pro ride times to previous dirt times, I think its pretty well established that they are not comparable.

Round Pen 10-24-2008 09:09 PM

King I understand that the Track is much faster and from what I understand the hotter it is the faster it gets. But my point is it was possible on the old dirt track for these horses to run the type of times that they ran today. it doesn't mean they would have but it was possible.

The 2 races for me tomorrow that are very interesting to me concerning time are the sprint and the classic. COuld the sprint run Sub 107 it's extremely possible. And the classic I am not going to be as dramatic and kill myself like Cannon:D but who knows the way the track was today, Could they run 158 and change absolutely but we will see. your thoughts on those 2 races and times tomorrow

ninetoone 10-24-2008 09:10 PM

Sorry, I meant the one tomorrow...:D

But $30 to place would have been nice...thanks for the heads up

ninetoone 10-24-2008 09:19 PM

Fabulous Strike

I wanna yell it from the rooftops like Tom Cruise...I like him tomorrow!!!

Linny 10-24-2008 09:22 PM

I was diappointed in Halfway to Heaven but Heart Shaped was my top pick and Maram my second, so while a reversal of the phto would have been nice, the Euro was hardly a disgrace, from post 12.

Yes, it was possible to do it on the old track. But do you realize that the old 1:20 flat for 7f has been broken by at least three different horses this year? In addition to Ventura going 1:19.90 today, Indian Blessing and Golden Doc A both went 1:19 4/5 earlier this year. The old record was held by a horse named Spectacular Bid. So I'm supposed to believe that a record set by a horse like that, one that's lasted almost 30 years, was bettered three times, twice by 3yo fillies (IB's first start of the year) and that track is no faster than the previous track was? Yes, it is possible that on the old dirt, they could have gone as fast as they did today but the likelyhood is very, very low that that many horses would have challenged or broken track records on the same day. Just because they were BC horses doesn't mean they are the fastest horses in the world, as evidenced by the last three times BC's have been held there.

As for tomorrow, if it plays like today, I'd predict times in the following ranges:
Marathon-2:27
Dirt Mile-1:32 3/5 to 1:33 3/5
Juvenile-1:41 2/5 to 1:42
Sprint-1:07 to 1:07 3/5
Classic-1:58 to 1:59

ninetoone 10-24-2008 09:27 PM

3-9 exacta...has a nice ring to it.

you are right but remember you said Euro, singular one horse out of 8 showed anything, I see a couple doing okay sat. however for all the hype this year on the Euros I think it's going to be poor showing, just an opinion, i'm not a pro like all the bloggers on the site.

Perhaps you should watch the races from today. No way does Fabulous Strike hang on up front. And that's too bad because I think he's by far the best horse in the race.

By the way didn't you box it ? It paid better the way it came in right?

I disagree that they've underperformed. Who was really supposed to do well other than Halfway to Heaven, who was untested at ten furlongs?

If Goldikova, Soldier of Fortune, Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator all run up the track tomorrow, I'll agree that the Euros underperformed.

ninetoone 10-24-2008 09:33 PM

It's gonna be like xtra heat in 2001, except for FS will hold on for the win....and FS won't be a girl...and a lot lower odds.

DEES3 10-24-2008 09:39 PM

After seeing the way the races were run today, what's fair value of FS? 6-1? He's been a long-time fave of mine since he dusted Talent Search in an ungraded stake at Mnr, but I just don't see how he hangs on tomorrow.

ninetoone 10-24-2008 09:40 PM

I'm gonna guess 5-1
