God, I hope the posts on this thread are representative of the odds on Derby day. That would be a treat.

why, which are the ones you really feel strongly about holding the bets on?

horseofcourse 04-28-2011 03:15 AM

After extensive and exhausting study in trying to determine the worst horse in this year's field I came up with Watch Me Go. That should put him over the top.

The proportion of folks posting here who love Mucho Macho Man is infinitely larger than his actual win chances. IMO, of course.

MISTERGEE 04-28-2011 02:22 PM

the ironic part is that besides MUcho, Kathy Ritvo has 47 starts and 1 win. I am sure she is capable and this may be just an oddity, but has any derby winning trainer ever come in with a similar record?

Chip Woolley?

Woolley hadn't won a race around a turn that year until he won the derby. So far this year, he's 2 for 69.

Indian Charlie 04-28-2011 04:28 PM

I don't think Spend A Bucks trainer was all that hot coming into KY.

MISTERGEE 04-28-2011 11:19 PM

actually woolley and gambolati were both around 10% trainers the years they won the derby

Perhaps I'm crazy, but Animal Kingdom will be in the trifecta at least.

Ok, you talked me into revealing who I like.

I'm going with Uncle Mo, but only because I so adore all of the offspring of my favorite horsey, Indian Charlie!

richard 04-29-2011 01:25 PM

Let me reach into the hat and....it's Shackleford.

AC has a dullard for a trainer, and has a pretty decent chance of not drawing in.

Mike 04-29-2011 07:44 PM

For me, everything is pointing toward Soldat as the horse to beat, and looking at 15-1 or so:$:

I see some Shacklefords among us, and quite a few Midnight Interludes

I won on The 'Lude in the S.A. Derby, and fear him the most ('cause it would hurt so bad to have dropped him), but many of the experts on DRF, Bloodhorse, Brisnet and others suggest he's a big bet against.

The information synthesizer in my brain has been heating up big time, with what looks like a throwout race in the Fla Derby (evidenced by a huge speed fig anomaly), excellent workout news;would love a wet track; nice effin connections in my gambling book

I don't completely dismiss him, but it's hard to gauge him, since his 2 wins this year were with absolute dream trips, something he's guaranteed not to get in the derby. With his running style, I think he's going to need a lot of luck.

King Glorious 04-30-2011 07:19 AM

If there had been a messege board in 1973, I could only imagine what would have been said about Secretariat after the Wood. Of course, he did have a brilliant Gotham to fall back on as a 3yo while Uncle Mo has nothing.

I've been waiting and waiting for another horse to step up and take over the lead in this pathetic class but none have and so by default, I still go with Uncle Mo. To me, he was so far ahead of the pack going into the last that it's going to take more than the Wood to make me get off of him now. So it's with resignation that I chose Uncle Mo.

Making it sound like a death sentence, it's still the smart bet just better odds now.

jms62 04-30-2011 02:45 PM

Shackelford worked 58.8 Bullet best of 36... He has passed Uncle Mo on my list.

Danzig 04-30-2011 05:51 PM

I'm glad you posted. :)

Dear new people who are still lurking around and wondering if they should or shouldn't...

This is my final effort.

Post now and you will forever be on my good side (or at least for the rest of the day).

Delay and when Andy decides to rip you apart for the pure entertainment value of it all you're on your own. :D

I am definately one of those lurkers. I enjoy reading the opinions and interpretations of most of the regulars here; they can be a little intimidating though. My pick is still Uncle Mo. I just wish he had a little more racing under his belt.
