Adds another $10,000 to Kitten's Joy fee cause he had made a 20th place horse in the KD

slotdirt 04-28-2010 11:07 AM

Running Pleasant Prince probably wouldn't have been likely anyway. DIdn't he just run up the track in the Derby Trial? Rather go 10f with one turf/poly Kitten's Joy than run another 3YO for the fourth time in like six weeks.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 11:09 AM

Total aside, but I'd heard Setsuko's been training lights-out at CD this week anyway. I hope we get to see him try the Belmont, perhaps.

Rail For Lookin At Lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

randallscott35 04-28-2010 11:11 AM

A damned shame. I really can't even blame the connections completely. Back when horse owners were sane, it was a no-brainer that the SA Derby runner-up could make the field. But nowadays...[see Beyer rant].

Duh, there were many Derbys where there weren't many horses.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 11:15 AM

Not only is this field utter muck, but the potential favorite and second favorite are now on the rail and in post 20. It's almost like CD planned it.

Thank you Captain Obvious, but is it necessary to be such a douchebag about it?

tjfla 04-28-2010 11:18 AM

Duh is tame hun. Relax.

Danzig 04-28-2010 11:33 AM

Just make it an invitational. Takes care of it all.

Weren't you the whining about this type of response in the Garret to the Shore thread just a few days ago?

I'm sure duh is the same as those responses...maybe look at that thread first and compare....My only point is I wouldn't want someone to be thrown by a fact that the rail horse has won the most Derby's when it isn't applicable to today's Derby's fields.

Sorry to hear that. Not a good reason to play him though.

Mike Welsh might as well have called this column "what could have been" or something like that:

Well, he would have been THE wiseguy horse if he had gotten in, so now it is just dart-tossing time. I get the feeling Ice Box will be a big underlay now.

Looks like SC is going to be throttled down whether he likes it not.

I have the unlikely Jackson Bend covered on my remaining future ticket, so (as of now) I will poke around with Ice Box, AA and Mission Impazable in this year's grade III Kentucky Derby. Let's hope for 4 inches of rain to make it a total clusterfork.

ninetoone 04-28-2010 12:47 PM

Rain would be a fitting ending to the chaos of this year...although sometimes clusters like this end up being chalky...we'll see!

LARHAGE 04-28-2010 01:09 PM

The only thing that could have been even worse for Lucky would have been if Cardiff Giant had made the field and drawn post 2, that slug has come in on Lucky in his last two causing him to be piched back, at least Ice Box is a dead closer.

actually its as good of reason as any to play this Derby this year.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 01:47 PM

Lost in all the Derby PP talk is the fact that the Curse of Exterminator lives on for yet another year.

ninetoone 04-28-2010 02:01 PM

Has the "wise guy" horse ever actually won the derby???

that's funny because I can't ever remember it happening. The wiseguy horse is usually an autotoss.

who is it this year anyway? Ice Box?

2MinsToPost 04-28-2010 04:32 PM

I'll be damned if I toss Calvin Borel on any of my tickets for this Derby. His track record at Churchill speaks volumes.

yeah either him or as Randall suggested Awesome Act. I don't really care for either of them.

slotdirt 04-28-2010 04:45 PM

Is there really a wise guy horse this year? If so, I'd say Paddy O'Prado is creeping into that picture.

Don't knock the tactic of repeating things aloud. One of these days Bloody Mary is gonna appear in the middle of an elementary school bathroom mirror and scare the crap out of an 8 year old girl.

I know folks are bemoaning a lack of Setsuko in the Derby, but he's going in the American Turf right? We might have an interesting group of turf runners this year. Maybe it's all in my head, but there are some I'm looking forward to seeing this year. Perhaps a decent U.S. BC contingent?

slotdirt 04-29-2010 05:56 AM

Well, you do have about six to ten really nice turf horses running in the Derby on Saturday, so there is that.
