No, but I did make a score......I bet that CT Phone Home would run last.

Surprisingly big.

And you were right about Jet Setting and the break. He came in and bothered Anlyn at the start.

I highly doubt think anyone was beating the winner regardless.

hoovesupsideyourhead 01-16-2008 01:42 PM

nope the 7 is pretty nice ....

Bobby Fischer 01-16-2008 01:45 PM

decent odds for I Promise and decent odds for the I Promise-Jet Setting straight exacta. I didn't have a ton of confidence in I Promise so the value wasn't there for me.

They ran to form as much as we pretty much knew that if I Promise was right, she would win here, and Jet Setting was in good form and would outfinish these.

We capped this race more than we cap some stakes races! :D

Thanks guys for a great thread. Interesting to see everyones perspective and betting discipline at work. Threads like this are very helpful for a weekend handicapper like myself. Thank you

I couldn't have hit that trifecta if I had used 7 out of the 8 horses. I didn't think there was any chance that Mrs Bunny Foo Foo (or whatever her name was) would hit the board. She would have been my pick for last. That shows what I know.

I don't know about picking her for last, but I did have her as LEAST likely to win. And was I hearing the announcer right? Was he pronouncing Mrs Rabbit as "Mrs Wabbit"?!

I like the way this thread developed, too. Maybe we should have our own Race of the Week here at Derby Trail?

that race is going to be a LOT harder to dissect. 11 horses, a couple coming off long layoffs or recent long layoffs. At first glance Bold Start seems to be the class, but is making his first start as a 4 y.o. and first start against older horses, could be McPeek has bigger plans for him down the road. Love his workout pattern. Bribon looks to have run some nice races and is in good current form, see if he can transfer that to GP surface having never run in Florida. I also think that Winnie's Tigger Too, who should be a long price, has run some deceptively good races against decent horses at CRC.

3kings 01-17-2008 04:53 AM

If someone has access to free PP's, can they post them for the 'Race of the Week" to fascilitate more discussion and analysis. This way people who might not be playing that particular card would have reference material to follow along.

hoovesupsideyourhead 01-17-2008 09:49 AM

ive got the top 4 as

st damon who on his best day can run with these .off the lay off he looks ready to fire..very good work patern

mr mastre had a good tune up for this and his best running has been done on the dirt

city dweller won the lost code then faded ..layed off for clemont and though shy on figs may improve

bribon the one to beat..top selection ..current form very good and his running lines are tough..that second to diamond isle is a good indicator he can press then clear..

Right, and I'm going to pass on even looking hard at this one. One of my goals when capping is to minimize the amount of inside info that I am up against. When you have possibly good horses coming off year-long layoffs, you are really up against it, IMO.

I'll wait for the next DT Race of the Week.

declansharbor 01-17-2008 11:29 AM

A return to Bushmill's Best last wins this one IMO. Retains Elvis who gave a good ride last out. Ziadie barn can never be overlooked. Elvis should have this one forwardly placed. I see it as having to hold off St. Daimon, on the cutback with a POSITIVE jock switch with Lezcano up after the 1 year layoff. St. Daimon's worktab says he's ready to fire one, possibly on/near the front. Maybe the time off gave him some fresh legs for the cutback try.

I don't like the idea of demonstrating to everyone on here that I'm an idiot every single week.

well.go for it steve likes mr mastre..

Coach Pants 01-19-2008 09:19 AM

This race is madness.

Izzie's Halo at 9-1 or higher.

Bobby Fischer 01-19-2008 09:43 AM

the 6th at Gulfstream is a heck of a maiden race IMO.

I like the 2nd choice , wouldn't surprise me if this "Shug" colt ends up in a race like the Wood.

I like Miller's Monarchos colt (15/1 ML) a little in that race. He isn't a likely winner but he showed a little run late in his debut and he certainly could improve when stretching out and switching surfaces. I think he could be a horse to use at a price in exotics.

Elysium Fields' Jan. 8th work stands out to me. A better break and this one should win fairly easy.

TheSpyder 01-19-2008 10:07 AM

9th Gulfstream

Very tough race as many have said.

I'd g with the #9 - Saint Daimon. You got to believe he's ready with the eye poping works shown so being in shape is no problem. And as a 5 YO you have to think he's in the best racing shape of his career. If you look whose he's run against and believe he ready to go I say he takes these.

Thoughts?

hoovesupsideyourhead 01-19-2008 10:16 AM

tough race ill use the 11 as the outsider along with the lodgical and probebly favored 8/3

I wonder why that horse hasn't tried the turf yet?
You would think that a colt that was by El Prado, out of a Silver Hawk mare, that was 0 for 3 on the dirt, and was trained by Tagg would be headed straight to the lawn.
I must be missing something.

Well he's shown some ability on the dirt, albeit against suspect company. This isn't exactly a race of world beaters either. The 3 contenders have outside posts and that's the kiss of death at this distance.

And isn't it common practice for some trainers to have their turfers break their maidens on the dirt?

hoovesupsideyourhead 01-19-2008 10:31 AM

most want to win on the dirt..thats where the money is..then to the turf..

That was a good work.
would love to know if he had the blinks for that workout^^^

Also note that the race @ Laurel was vs. derby hopeful Visionaire.

I really liked Elysium Field's finish in the last race... I don't like the addition of the blinkers -
Sometimes you add the blinks to a horse that has some nice late form, and he wants to flatten out a little.. (hard to disagree with a hof trainer like Tagg)

A lot of interesting horses in here... The Indian Charlie (Sir Jock) is a nice big horse, but he hasn't shown a ton of talent yet , there is the Zito horse off the layoff, the Ward/Oxley Gray ....

It should come down to the two ml fav along with whatever speed can last.

TheSpyder 01-19-2008 11:11 AM

What about the Pletcher horse, Calzone. He's on fire this meet, has positive ROI for first routers, and seems to have taken this one back for some tinkering and should bring him ready. Pletcher/J.R. only 73% at the meet....and ML 10/1...Looks Yummy

This is, apparently, a very hard concept for people to grasp.

he's a total unknown. Bred like a champ. Hottest jockey/trainer combo. Just didn't show much in his debut. At least he was passing a few tired horses.
If you were to spread heavy in a trifecta or something you would have to include underneath.\\

EDIT - i don't know what the heck i'm going to do here... I am basically looking very chalky with my capping - usually means I pass the race... I am also considering the superfecta. This could be a rare race where using a 2 horse key makes sense.

I get that as a general rule, but given this particular horse's pedigree and trainer I would have expected him to switch to the grass earlier.
But of course, he won by 8 today on the dirt so....

was closing out a nice P3 and was moving forward in P4 if Winnie goes by @35:1..looked like a winner at the top of the stretch.

chop chop gets his quota for the week at my expense.

Nice tag though. Would not have picked that one ever
