Anyways I was looking at the Belmont card at Equibase and think I might actually get the PP's and cap it tonight and tomorrow morning and go place some bets at the track. I finally have a bit of time and I recognize some old names I might like to see again.

Paired with SIlver Wagon

As a New Yorker I like Funny Cide, but come on, he would be lucky to be in the same zip code as some of these horses. I agree with you... Stands no chance, at every angle. I'll be wagering this race heavily tomorrow. Leaning towards Latent Heat, with Political Force being my value play. I vow to give up horse racing (for a month) if Aftg hits the board, for my handicapping would be deemed worthless to me.

The Indomitable DrugS 05-27-2007 11:14 PM

I actually think this is a rather overrated group of horses...and not the "star studded" field that is being so widely reported.

#1 Mr. Umphrey- Is SW's rabbit and has no chance.

#1A Silver Wagon- got the dream trip/setup he projected to get last time out.

#2. Lawyer Ron- Will be overbet off a win against a soft field last time out.

#3. Half Ours- Is overrated, and has the expected fast pace working against him.

#4. Sun King- Is 0-for-12 lifetime in Grade 1 races, his only win in about the last 20 months or so came at the expense of Kazoo.

#5. Accountforthegold- Has the pace working against him...and has a habit of folding when denied the lead.

#6. Latent Heat- While he had a big trip excuse last time, I thought he had real soft trips in his two Southern Cal stake wins.

#7. Political Force- Just isn't all that good.

#8. Corinthian- Had a trip excuse in last--after a pair of soft trip wins in South Florida.

#9. Silent Name- Has never run on a natural dirt surface...and is doing so for the first time in Grade 1 stake company.

Needless to say---this isn't exactly my favorite running of the Met Mile.

declansharbor 05-27-2007 11:17 PM

NOw that you got all of the cons out of the way, what are some of the pros of the race?? lol

I agree, after seeing the nominations, I was ecstatic. It's safe to say it didnt fill up as expected..Bummer, but oh well..

The cons certainly far outweigh the pros in this one.

Silver Wagon and Sun King appear to be the two most likely to get the best setup with all the speed in the race.

Lawyer Ron and Latent Heat appear to have the best chances if the pace turns out slower than expected....but LR will be too short of a price.

Silent Name, who is something of a wildcard, has FAR better dirt breeding than you see for the average horse trying a natural dirt surface for the first time in Grade 1 company.

His 3rd, 4th, and 5th dam were all American stake winners on dirt. His 1st and 2nd dam never had the chance to run over it. Sire Sunday Silence was an all-time great racehorse--making all of his career starts on dirt---however, he's proved to be a little better turf sire.

I give an edge to Silver Wagon as the Met's most likely winner.

You just made a case for a competitive race. Thats exactly what most people want to see. No Ghostzapper going off at 2/5. Unless you are saying Silver Wagon will win going away. I am excited cause of the unknowns.

I did enjoy watching Mineshaft absolutley crush 4 and 5 horse fields. But it was not the least bit interesting.

Coach Pants 05-27-2007 11:34 PM

Silver Wagon if he doesn't scratch. That's a big if when you're talking about Dutrow.

Antitrust32 05-27-2007 11:41 PM

this is a friggin real good field, considering ya know, how the horses are these days. I am looking forward to this race. i'll probably play and exacta using pletchers two, sun king, and laten heat. Maybe a tri too. I'll have to check what the exacta prices will be paying before I shell out the dough I dont really have.

Edit: I like Silver Wagon also.. again, I'll have to check out prices and PP's before final dec. but those 5 horses will be the play (maybe I'll do a tri and key a horse.... dunno... trying to figure out this whole gamblin thing, eventhough i've been trying it for 12 years now)

blackthroatedwind 05-27-2007 11:45 PM

I don't know how anyone can look at this race and consider Half Ours a contender. If he was trained by anyone else he would be 30-1. He's impossible here. Where the hell is his good race?

brianwspencer 05-27-2007 11:53 PM

I think Silent Name has every chance to take to the dirt -- and should be heavily considered, along with Sun King and (gulp) Lawyer Ron.

King Glorious 05-28-2007 12:06 AM

I think I'm going with Lawyer Ron for the win over Silent Name with Half Ours third. In the tri, I'll play:

Lawyer Ron/Silent Name/Half Ours
Lawyer Ron/Silent Name/Half Ours
Lawyer Ron/Silent Name/Half Ours/Latent Heat/Corinthian

XIIPointStables 05-28-2007 05:30 AM

Pace looks like it will set up for Sun King or Silver Wagon.

Politcal Force will need to step it up but I'll take a shot/play some exotics with him,

Never off the board at Belmont. Never off the board at a mile. Jerkens/C-Val. Getting good at the right time?

We'll see.

He'll have to run fast early, middle, and late. I think Lawyer Ron will crack under pressure.

I have it down to Sun King, and maybe Silent Name or Silver Wagon closing past the hot pace.

Lawyer Ron is not suited for pace and distance to win at 10 furlongs -- see last year's Kentucky Derby and BC Classic. He is Grade 2 winner, Arkansas Derby & Oaklawn Handicap, looking to take next step in Grade 1 event. Pletcher has well-planned 2007 campaign for Lawyer Ron. First, he wins February tuneup at GP; then, dominates Oaklawn's premier race for older horses at 9 panels.

Today's cutback to one-turn mile is superior fit for his breeding and training. He will stalk early speed, start moving forward around 3/8th pole, and will get and maintain lead for 2-plus length victory. Prado handled him masterfully in OP win. He will use LR's high cruising speed and repeat today!

Doesnt the fact that SW has never won going a mile or at Belmont bug you?

I agree betting Sun King isnt exactly a lock as he has had problems winning.

Danzig 05-28-2007 09:36 AM

i think this is a pretty good field--think about some of the gr 1 fields we've been subjected to!

if silent name takes to the dirt, i like him to win it.

if not, sun king over ron, with silver wagon coming late for a piece.

i agree about half ours, i think he's in over his head--now watch him win it!

hurricanefrank 05-28-2007 10:15 AM

Met Mile

#4 Sun King (5-1) is my tepid selection in very intriguing feature but I will need value to play him. Was 2d in this race last year, losing by head to Silver Train; troubled '07 debut in G3 Westchester prep but that race, along with peppy 46.4 work on May 21, should set him up well for a top effort today; likely to sit behind the speed (and there's alot of it) and look to kick it in gear down the lane to swallow up what I hope will be tiring speed; worth noting he's the closest to knocking off World Champ Invasor, losing a nose bob last August in the Whitney at the Spa. The one to beat is Pletcher's #2 Lawyer Ron (5-2) who is fluorishing under Todd's care but likely to be overbet and still has yet to beat the caliber of horses he's facing today. Perhaps Pletcher gets him over the top today. Gotta use in any exotics under Prado. May also throw #9 Silent Name (JPN)(8-1) into the mix given he is a natural miler who comes in off smashing G2 score at KEE; question mark is fact that he tries dirt first time (20 starts); if his form translates, he could be a handful late.

Hickory Hill Hoff 05-28-2007 10:20 AM

Going with - Lawyer Ron & Sun King
I'll boxed them in an exacta and use underneath;
Latent Heat, Silver Wagon and Corinthian in the third spot.

NO superfecta in this race...why???

IrishofNDMan 05-28-2007 10:52 AM

I'm gonna take Silent Name. Probably do a little Win/Place bet on him.

Should one read anything into the fact that Prado DIDN't choose to ride unbeaten filly Vacare in a G1 in SoCal, choosing instead to ride Lawyer Ron in the Met Mile? One has to assume he had a choice; don't think Clemente told him to take a hike.

A chance at $36,000 or flying west for a chance at $18,000.

declansharbor 05-28-2007 01:06 PM

Does anyone know where I can watch this race live other than an OTB? TV Phonebet doesn't allow feed from NY...Thanks in advance

I agree...this is a one-time mount for Valdivia should Vacare come back east for the rest of the year as expected. Besides, like Pillow Pants said the money's better in the Met and the chance to get the mount on a older handicap horse is always better.

He rode Kip Deville in his last race and he looks like he could win the Shoemaker. Tough call as it's hard to know what my wife is thinking and I know her a little bit more than I know Edgar Prado.

packerbacker7964 05-28-2007 03:37 PM

I'll take Sun King in here today. Sun King/Latent Heat/ Lawyer Ron tri box

$2 Pick 3 (6-8-8) 3 Correct Paid $639.00

ouch

SilverRP 05-28-2007 04:04 PM

Talk about sting. I had Political Force on top at 20/1 +. This stings much like the whip Prado put across the face of PF down the stretch!!! Damn.

whodey17 05-28-2007 04:09 PM

Sun King just doesnt have it anymore. The horse doesnt have any improvement at all in him. This is sad, as I like this horse. I didnt understand him being 7/2 in this race at all.

declansharbor 05-28-2007 04:09 PM

Hit the exacta (keyed PF in 2ne and 3rd) and had 5$ ATB on PF (my value play)... Hope some people cashed some tickets..Great race...
