Tell me again

what is the knock against them?

This rubbed me the wrong way not to mention made them look like total idiots in retrospect. This is in reference to them having just bought Oh So Awesome and proclaiming that he'd win the Belmont.

http://www.teamvalor.com/news/032106/

Why this year’s Belmont?
It is common in most years for seasoned observers of the Turf to decry a lack of quality in the Classic crop. Shouts of “This has got to be the worst bunch of bums yet” are heard virtually every year. But there is mounting evidence that 2006 may actually be the worst!

Barry Irwin and Jeff Siegel agree that the current Classic crop based in North America is pathetic in its lack of talent, perhaps the worst since Gato del Sol crawled home 24 years ago in the 1982 Run for the Roses.

Barry Irwin said he has barely seen a legitimate Grade 1 horse in the crop, let alone a horse up to normal Classic standard. He thinks the only true Classic horse in the crop could be Discreet Cat, who has run but twice and currently is training in Dubai.

Jeff Siegel, who hosts a television program on which he follows the progress of the Classic crop, is just as down on the current group of horses as his partner.

“Can you imagine what will be left of this bunch by the time the Belmont Stakes is run?” they opine.

While last year's crop was FAR from being bad.......

The rodents that showed up in the Belmont Stakes were awful....

The race was also over-flowing with horses who look pretty doubtful to see out 12 furlongs.

In fact, the race was so bad, that the immortal Bob And John was a razor thin favorite over the great Steppenwolfer.

I know it is fun to root against 'the rich guys' or the 'guys with all the good horses' - I do it myself - but I still remember when Barry Irwin was my first editor (at the CTBA magazine), skinny, and driving a VW (was it a Civic? Cheap, economical car). He parlayed his knowledge of horses and betting into an empire and I can't fault him for that. However I have to admit that Jeff Siegel annoys the heck out of me on HRTV.

I don't root against " rich guys " and certainly Team Valor doesn't have " all the good horse "...or even any good horses.....but I do root against hypocrats who tell others about how to deal with the drug issue while employing virtually every suspended drug violator in the game.

Having said that, while I have no idea how this particular horse is doing now, that was sure a loaded maiden field she beat at Churchill last Spring.

YAY FOR PANTY! She's my 3yo gal for sure.

philcski 02-08-2007 03:38 PM

Odds please, if anyone can provide.

Mac88 02-08-2007 07:10 PM

Did not see a new thread about race. Might have missed it. Silver Knockers somewhat impressive. Panty Raid between horses in run down backstretch and Johnny V looking over shoulder into the lane as she backed out of it quickly. Maybe she needed it off layoff. Awhuganah made nice rally up for place. Dont think time was that impressive but might be wrong. Not sure we are going to see a whole bunch come out of this but Silver Knockers might be ok down the road

If someone could put a replay up on YouTube I'd really really appreciate it. Pletcher's assistants obviously didn't have her ready, and I'm sorely disappointed.
