Heard a levee already was overtopped (not failed) and they are making rescues in Plaquaminnes Parish (spelling yeah) due to flooding.

But the National Guard has been there since Monday, heavy presence in the streets of NO, they are right on top of rescues, police everywhere and available, tons of people evacuated Tuesday out of town north before storm into Red Cross shelters - seems they are on top of it so far, regarding public safety. Thank goodness.

Preparation has been great. All politics aside;), Bobby Jindal is an extremely sharp individual and this situation is right up his alley. From the beginning you could tell he wants no part of a failure similar to the Blanco/Nagin/Bush debacle that was Katrina. The situations with people needing to be rescued leaves me with one prevailing thought: Do these people have any remorse for being stupid and not heeding evacuation warnings? They are putting courageous rescuers in the line of danger unnecessarily.

Seems like current NO mayor is pretty sharp, too. Jindal has done very well with all the weather his state has received since his election.

As an ex-rescuer, I agree with your sentiment for the young, healthy, able. Putting my own life in danger to rescue "stupid" never felt good. But they are still people in danger, so ... and yeah, some felt remorse - or guilt, more accurately. But that doesn't make it any different on the rescuer risks.

And they are told during hurricanes, "you can call, but nobody will be able to come get you".

But I recall that in Katrina, the majority of the 1800 deaths were poor and elderly, over 60 years of age. People in wheelchairs or with chronic medical conditions, with no money, no cars, don't self-evacuate well. That leaves it up to levees. Which failed in Katrina.

there are several things about disasters that always leave me shaking my head. and the above is one of them. i feel it is the height of stupidity to have days, or even a week or more of warning, and yet they stay. and then they get po'd because the rescuers just don't show up quickly enough.
tornadoes, fires, etc can come out of nowhere, with next to no warning, or no warning. and yet we put time, money, effort into learning how to better track storms...and for what?

A local in the town where the levee was breached saved a 5 year old baby from a rooftop while the Coast Guard was deciding when the storm would calm down so they could start helping.

I despise Piyush and Half-Moon. Nagin was decent first-term mayor but then went absolutely insane after Katrina. I was glad he beat Half-Moon in 2006 though. Half-Moon showed his true colors when he turned to Marc Morial and Sidney Barthelemy for support. The city was looking forward and here was Half-Moon looking backwards.

There are very few parts of Plaquemines Parish that any sane individual would stay in with a hurricane bearing down on them. Mostly just around Belle Chasse.
