Well, by that logic, aren't the horses in the Arkansas Derby just prepping for a bigger race as well? In that case, its Grade II billing is just where it should be. Is it really on par with the Kentucky Derby?

I have no issue with the Ark Derby beng a G2 if the Wood, Blue Grass and SA Derby are downgraded. Those 4 races are clearly on par with each other.

I can't believe with all of the ridiculous races on the west coast that are Grade Is that someone would even fathom targeting a race like the Just a Game as having an unnecessarily high grade.

NT

I daresay that Keeneland has some "over graded" races as well. I agree about the Just A Game. It's been a very strong race for years. In fact the race Ventura won at KEE was upgraded after her win in the BC. Ventura won the Just A Game last year.

If this is the way you feel, you really shouldn't be arguing for the Arkansas Derby to be grade one. It's a prep for a bigger one isn't it? Just as you run in the San Felipe before you run in the SA Derby, you run in the Arkansas Derby before you run in the Kentucky Derby. Is the Arkansas Derby really on a par with the Kentucky Derby or the Travers?

Sorry Brian. Soon as I entered this, I saw your post. Great minds.............

That's my belief too.

How about limiting Grade 1s to race of national and international significance. Along with the BC races, this list would include:

2yo-Champagne.
2yof-Frizette.
3yo-Triple Crown events, Haskell, Travers.
3yof-KY Oaks, Alabama, Queen Elizabeth II.
Older Dirt: Big Cap, Met Mile, Hollywood Gold Cup, Stephen Foster, Whitney, Woodward, Pacific Classic, JCGC, Cigar Mile.
Older F&M Dirt: Beldame, Spinster.
Older Turf: Arlington Million, Hirsch Classic.
Older F&M Turf: Beverly D, First Lady, Flower Bowl, Matriarch.

No Eastern bias with this list. None.

And unfortunately the best turf race for older males on the east coast was excluded from Grade I consideration on the list.

As well as for the females.

I'm all for reducing the number of G1s but that list is definitely way too small.

I'm from Louisiana, so I don't have any dogs in this hunt.

Which one did I miss? Man O' War? Manhattan? United Nations? Sword Dancer?
