colored saddle cloths please

Travis Stone 04-09-2009 04:43 PM

I'm pretty sure the non-change to this point has to do with the brand, marketing... purple saddle cloths = BC... hands down. Photos, collateral etc., it's all the same.

yeah, not pointed at you but

screw the bettors who have to strain their eyes thru the race

the bettors who help fuel this sport 40 some weekends out of the year, the bettors who fuel this sport thru the week etc etc

just my opinion, one of the biggest wagering days of the year why would they cater to those who fuel the pools the other 40 plus weekends etc etc?

nah, lets cater to the celebs and high profile types? guarentee you "our" (us hard core week in week out) "players" far exceed this portion of the wagering dollar, the "high profile" weekend player on BC Day, KY Derby Day etc..

The bettors will get paid winnings regardless of the color of the saddletowel.

While it might be a BIT easier to follow the race for a few seconds...you still may or may not know who is getting up in time...

Truly, I believe following the silks is what you should do, but save changing the saddle towels, why not adding Trakus and showing the chicklets?

Not might, it would be a hell of a lot easier if they colored the saddlecloths. Are you saying that's it's easier to remember the silks of 4-5 horses that you might have in a leg of a pick 3 or 4? I really don't know why they are so stubborn on this issue. But then again why should I be suprised. These are the same people that decided to go back to back years at Santa Anita.

chicklets are the most annoying thing ever. How Keeneland and Del mar do it is good, just the numbers across the bottom, but those dancing things are the worst. I am all for tradition, but BC Day is a day we can showcase our great game to many many new fans as well as try to get casual fans more involved, why make it more confusing by having the same color saddle towels??

Have you been to Keeneland or seen the Woodbine simucast?

It is far from annoying, give someone that is actually watching the race the opportunity to find their horse.

I've been to Keeneland tens of times and i've watched the woodbine simulcast quite a bit. I just dont care for them at all with the bouncy thingys, i do however like when they just post the order in a straight line.

Just my opinion, i can understand where your coming from completely, if i had the option i wouldnt have them.

NTamm1215 04-09-2009 09:23 PM

The Woodbine simulcast signal is horrendous. They've taken up half the screen to put up the chicklets that not only bounce around all the time but switch over every time a turn is made.

I love what Keeneland and Del Mar do and Woodbine could immediately improve their signal by following suit.

Start using all different colors and you wind up with a race that looks like the third at Emerald Downs on a tuesday.

Im in favor of having a Mountaineer style Breeders Cup.
The #10 horse would get overbet in every race with those pretty polka-dot silks.

I agree, keep them on the bottom of the screen and all is well.

Mountaineer is straight :$:

Yeah .. the inside posts get stuck with the solid colors. Godolphin owns every 3 horse to ever run at Mountaineer.

Keep the silks purple but dye the horses like Easter Eggs.

Happy Easter

TheSpyder 04-10-2009 07:44 AM

In my opinion the BC is more about the veterans and hardcore players... two days and 13 races is too much for someone to jump into this game. It's way too much racing for a newbie to understand.

Races like the Kentucky Derby and Belmont (with TC on the line) are better venues for new fan attraction.

Good point. However, i consider myself somewhat of a hardcore fan/player and when i was watching the races at our OTB where you couldnt hear Trevor, i had no clue what Desert Code or Goldikova's silks were, hence it would have been really nice to know they were the 9 or 4 horse with their saddle towel. As a fan and bettor, its hard enough to try and pick winners out of the form, no sense in making them memorize silks to 200 horses over the 2 days.

SuffolkGirl 04-10-2009 12:02 PM

Colored saddle cloths please.

In an attempt to meld the tradition of purple cloths and insure that the races don't look like every other race at some B level track couldn't they use the standard colored cloths with a BC purple border? Granted, some of the combinations will be difficult and/or hideous to look at but it might be a start.

PatCummings 04-10-2009 12:10 PM

If using "chicklets" the Keeneland/Del Mar model would certainly be best. I completely agree there.

What is the issue with OTBs not playing sound? Even on track simulcasting areas should play sound. It is the two biggest days in American racing and you don't get sound?

Talking about colored saddletowels - if you are sitting at an OTB and don't have personal TV in front of you, with the lack of clarity in these signals anyway, your chances of clearly seeing the saddle towel colors is limited. I'm not saying it wouldn't be some help, but I think it can be a bit overblown.
