I can't recall the last time a soccer match made the front page of any major United States newspaper... while horse racing tends to at least once or twice a year.

I'm not disputing soccer on a worldwide scale, but on a US-base scale, I question its overall popularity, that's all.

It's not wildly popular in the U.S., but it's easily more popular than horse racing, which is barely a blip on the national sports scene.

I will say Seamus Malin is one of the best color commentators of any sport out there. Grew up watching him work the Cosmos games.
