a seven year old can certainly beat younger, i would disagree with that part of it. don't forget john henry only seemed to get better with age.

but he is a horse who has to have everything go his way to look good.

Why?
First of all - as a fan - I enjoy watching horses run really fast races. He does that at times, and hardly any other horses running today actually seem capable of that.
Perhaps more importantly, as a handicapper, don't horses that are that predictable often make for winning bets?
If you see the horse in a race where he isn't likely to get the early lead, people that can recognize his limitations stand to make money looking eleswhere compared to those that are simply dazzled by big figures.
On the other hand, in a race where he does figure to make the early lead easily, he is likely to be a very good value if there are also any other quality horses in the field.
What's not to like?

Speaking purely from a fan's perspective, I don't really give a **** about "really fast races" that are run only under perfect circumstances. I like consistent, mature, versatile horses who continually run their race, no matter what. Like Curlin.

agree hossey....grasshopper would be second, but i'd say 2-4 lenghts off commentator... and goin 1 1/8 at the age of 7 he could beat this group

pipe dream ? the major goal this year is the whitney, so i dont think 8 or less is in the thoughts.

[quote=DaHoss9698]I think everyone loves horses like that. Problem is, there are just so few of them. Obviously Commentator is inconsistent, but he is also very fragile. I'm not making excuses or even trying to make him seem like he is more horse than he really is. But when he is on, he's damn good and it's fun watching him when he brings his "A" game.[/QUOTwh

he losses when he gets pressed through very very fast fractions. dont most ?
why has he not been stretched out again in so long ? i think he can be most effective at 1 1/8, even now.

Well no kidding, but these days if you only like horses that fit that description you won't like 99.999999999% of the horses out there.

To answer the real question of this thread, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the CD Handicap on Derby Day. Seems like the next real good fit.

makes sense to me.... i want him to go long.... how long is the cd handicap ?

jcs11204 04-14-2008 10:44 PM

i have to be honest... he is the best horse i have ever seen run LIVE AND IN PERSON...his whitney over st liam was gigantic, and the next race... just read the chart....UNDER ATTACK...... st liam comes back to win the breeders cup, does that not say enough about commentator

It is a 250,000 7f gift for the one turn wonder.
He is fun to watch.

But he will have to enter
a claiming race to win at two turns again.

I cant remember the race exactly but I remember
Spanish Chestnut and the other fast horse damn
I cant remember. think it was Pomeroy. Just bit
into him and he just wilted in the stretch. There
are a number of clear memories of him just absolutely
getting swallowed in a stretch run if he got challenged.

But its nice to see the old one still running.
Just dont crucify the horse making him go two turns.
Keep him at Belmont if you want him to run longer;
he dies turning twice.

Eh, I disagree. I'd say Commentator is in the minority as a horse that quits if he doesn't get his way.

a claming race ??????? to win at two turns ? are you kidding me ? do you not read, the goal is the whitney. he is being pointed to the whitney, and he's argubly the fastest horse in the world.

you make it like he just quits, a lot of horses quit when they go 22-44.1 for 7 furlongs
