The 2007 Derby Trail Contest

This is a new contest for 2007 that may replace the winter contest and will focus on the Trail to the Kentucky Derby. Each week a list of stakes races for 3 year old horses will be posted and you will be asked to pick one horse for each race that you believe will be the winner. The “bet” you are placing is a $2 WPS and where ever your horse finishes, you will get that payout across the board (ie: if your horse wins, you will get the win/show/place payouts combined, if your horse places you will get place/show, etc.). You have to play all prep races for the week.

AND as an added bonus, anyone who places bets before the KY Derby on the eventual winner gets those points (or $$$) multiplied by 10 (ie: Barbaro in last years Florida Derby paid $5.20 / $3.60 / $2.80 for a $2 bet across the board so your return was $11.60. With this contest, after he won the KY Derby, you would be credited with an additional $116 - Winning points of $11.60 x 10 = $116).

You can jump in and out as often as you want... I've got a HUGE spreadsheet with everone listed week by week, race by race... if you miss a week, you just don't get any points/$$$. You won't lose money, only gain (unlike gambling in real life) so the more you play, the better your chance. I personally hate it when my losses eat away all my winnings so this game won't be like real life :p

You can only be in the positive in this game, you'll never dip into the negative. I found from watching and playing these contest threads that as people get deeper in the hole, they fade away and don't want to play anymore and soon it's only 4 people putting up their picks...

Yes, unfortunately so... but remember, you won't lose $$ - this is a contest where you always even ($0) or ahead (unlike real life :D ). The more times you play (as long as you're a half-way decent capper), the better your chances... and sometimes, a longshot that places or shows can have a better payoff than than a chalky favorite.

FYI... according to the websites at Gulfstream and Santa Anita at 8:30 am west coast time, there are no early scratches for the stakes races in our contest today.

In the future, when you make your picks for the contest early (for example, on Friday night), if you would like to make alternate picks for your choices, please feel free to do so... nothing worse than having your horse scratch the morning of the race and you not know it because you're actually doing something on the weekend other than be at your computer all day ;)

FYI, there were three players who were given credit for the PT favorite in the first days races due to scratches, after consultation with contest experts (a few other horse players) I decided that it was only fair to make this concession for this one weekend. Please note that this is a one time occurance, I give you plenty of time to make changes and I also allow you to pick an alternate.


I will post next weeks games by Wednesday evening and will post free PP's as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. Prizes will be awarded to the top three, of course those prizes will be either giveaways from Bay Meadows/Golden Gate Fields or basketball/football t-shirts from my employer, Eastern Washington University :D

It has been corrected... thank you for your patience!
