On a day with bombs flying, it was appropriate that Premium Tap stunned the Woodward Saturday in a front end battle with perpetual hard-luck battler Second of June. The Spa surface was kind to speed all day, but it was totally evident in the feature that off the pace were runners were doomed. Sun King did a great job of just hitting the board, as John Kimmel's 4yo and Bill Cesare's oft-injured 5yo pulled a Jaipur-Ridan going 1-2, 2-1 all the way around the 9 panel trip.
A race earlier, Marty Wolfson's Pomeroy proved out again at the Spa, winning a sprint stake for the third year in a row annexing the Forego. Commentator faded badly in his anticipated return. More on the Woodward and Forego later in the week and Tuesday on "At the Races and Beyond"...
Our day was mediocre at best until the nightcap, proving only that it often takes perseverence in this game to capitalize on your views. Keen Lassie (3rd choice), My Interpretation (5th choice), Willi's Sweet Girl (2nd choice), Fairytale Story (1st choice) and Point Me To It (5th choice) finished 1-2-3-4-5 in the 10 horse field, and the $598.50 super ($1), $191 trifecta ($1) and $26 exacta ($1) were the rewards... We were able to identify 3 on top winners and a few more 2nd-3rd choice successes, but the exotics scores had been meager until the the 11th race.
Rain off and on again today, and a $350,000 carryover looms. No way to know if we stay on the lawn right now, but the main will be good at best starting the penultimate day of the meet...
