There are days in this endeavor that are maddening beyond description.. Thursday was one of those days. Handicapping well and wagering poorly is a quick way to drive yourself crazy, and despite getting many exotics right yesterday, I managed to make less money on them than I did taking the Win-Show stab on the 6th race "Longshot Alert" Sneaky Girl (33-1)!

I bet straight on value plays that finished third no less than three times while having the exacta or tri in hand, and in the case of the featured Victory Ride, an exacta when I had the tri and superfecta. In the 2nd, Sciacca's Wood Winner was a generous 13-2 (4-1 ML), and with the scratch of Eye for Style the resulting tabs looked too chalky to play exotics. But a $1 tri box of him with Prideland and Belknap County returned $28... The 3rd had Del Carroll's Distinct Pleasure overlaid at 11-1 (5-1), and again, a $1 tri box of her with my other two choices (winner Win With a Wink and Laurentide Ice) was the zag when I zigged: $56 tri... The worst frustration came in the 6th when despite making winner Miss Shipley a "capital letter play" and noticing Gullo bomb Sneaky Girl ($11.80 to show), I couldn't find the $665.50 ($1) tri because I failed to use place pony Rendezvous Sioux (11-2)... Finally, to add insult to injury, Larry Jones' Wildcat Bettie B performed to expectation in the feature, and despite offering up the three that followed her home ($177 super, $83 tri), I only played a modest exacta ($27). Uggh...

So what was Thursday's lesson? I'm not sure. It turned out to be a great day to play rolling P3's, and I barely considered them. Was I unfocused? Did I think the card was tougher than it turned out to be? Perhaps... 2 "on top" winners, 2 second choice winners and 3 third choice winners in 8 races should have yielded one of the best days of the meet, and it didn't. And while I left with more money than I came with, the day leaves a sour taste knowing that it was set up to be one of the better afternoons of the meet. Hope you did better than me...

Travers Day looks to be great if the weather holds up tomorrow, and Friday's card is inviting with the Persional Ensign (Gr. I) featured... Let's have at it!
