A great day of racing Saturday at the Spa with a big crowd on hand and two Grade I thrillers on what may have been the nicest day of the summer so far.. Invasor continued his march through American racing as the Argentinian-bred 3.5yo edged a game Sun King for his third straight Grade I win in the Whitney. Earlier, the Test went to Hobeau Farms' Swap Fliparoo and Mr. Jerkens in a totally inscrutable running of the Alabama prep.

Looking more and more like the pre-eminant Horse of the Year candidate, Kiaran McLaughlin's handsome Shadwell bay stalked the pace before taking the lead at the top of the stretch, and reached the wire first with Nick Zito and Tracy Farmer's colt gaining ground under ther shadow of the wire. Sun King has now placed or shown in 3 Grade I's, and continues to be a threat nearly every time he runs.

A rough day handicapping as few things went our way other than the 1-2 punch of Invasor-Sun King in the feature. Only three play at the windows, and we were fortunate to bail out even when a wheeling of AE Conrad's Crossing paid off nicely in the nightcap. The one that got away Saturday was the 3rd's $500 trifecta, as a last-minute keying of Finger Lakes whiz Charlton Baker's Mr. Bourbon Street (2nd) over Ferocious Fires (1st)/Log Jam (3rd) fell short. An extra $14 with the Rochester invader keyed 2nd under the winner and show pony would have brought back half of the tri pot.

The track is playing entirely differently now than it was before the rains and heat, with speed holding better than it had been and the rail suddenly a good place to be. We'll see if that trend continues today, but will continue to tread lightly until they begin to run well for us again...
