From Del Mar stable notes -

MAJOR EFFORT BEING MADE TO SAVE TWIX AFTER INJURY
Twix, who finished second in Thursday’s third race and was vanned off with a fractured left knee, was being cared for this morning in the barn of trainer Jeff Metz, who claimed the 5-year-old Argentine-bred mare from A.C. Avila.

“All efforts are being made to save her,” Jennifer Metz, the trainer’s wife, said this morning. “Jeff slept on it and decided we needed to try and save her,” she added. Jeff Metz was overseeing the rest of his string at Hollywood Park this morning.

The mare was standing in her stall this morning being cared for by a groom.

Bilo pulled up, back with Jones
Jay Privman

A little more than 13 months ago, Bilo won the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap. He followed that up with a victory in the California Cup Sprint Handicap, an emotional win for trainer Marty Jones, since it occurred just days after the passing of Bilo's owner and breeder, Ed Nahem.

Bilo, now 8, was subsequently sold to owners Scott Anastasi and Dan Capen and transferred to Mike Mitchell, but his form has gone south. After two poor tries in stakes races, he was dropped into a $62,500 claimer here on Aug. 2, and beat one horse. Then on Sunday, when plummeting to the $25,000 claiming level in a 6 1/2-furlong race, Bilo got about 50 yards out of the gate before jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. began to pull him up.

"He felt a little gimpy," Valdivia said Monday. "I hope he's okay."

There were no claims in for Bilo, a gelding, but he's changing barns. Mitchell on Monday gave the horse back to Jones.

"He hasn't run well for me, and Marty loves that old horse," Mitchell said. "I didn't think there was any way we were going to lose him on Sunday. I just wanted to get him in an easier spot and get him eligible for the starter-allowance race on Cal Cup Day. I thought I had him ready to go. I still think he's got some game left.

"The owners told Marty to train him, and if he thinks he should be retired, to retire him. If he wants to run him, he can run him. I've known Marty a long time. His father, Gary, is my best friend. I know Marty loves that horse. If he wants to retire him, I know he'll find him a nice home."

Bilo has won 7 of 19 starts and $524,436.

Spenditallbaby, who suffered two fractured sesamoids early in the Sunshine Millions Distaff on Jan. 24, continues to hold her own following surgery a week ago Friday. “So far, so good,” said trainer Barry Abrams, who has the daughter of Unusual Heat at his Santa Anita barn .

For anyone wondering about Spring House (who I was about to add here)...

(DRF)

Spring House, the winner of the Grade 2 San Luis Obispo Handicap here last month, was vanned off "as a precaution," according to steward Scott Chaney. Spring House was not urged through the final sixteenth by jockey Alex Solis.

Spring House was taken to trainer Julio Canani's stable for observation.

Has anyone heard an update on Zada Belle since she was sent to Rood and Riddle for surgery?

Also, sadly Spenditallbaby was euthanized March 30th :(. The article didn't give much information other than she was euthanized, when the injury happened, and a basic rundown of her career and connections. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/49963/spenditallbaby-euthanized

This is probably posted in the Angels thread, but sadly Saarland died as well. Apparently he was at part owner Jess Jackson's ranch in California and died of injuries suffered when he ran into a feeder. I know he pulled up. It didn't look life-threatening but I don't know for sure. I didn't hear anything.

Have you noticed that far fewer horses are having catastrophic injuries in the afternoon at HP and SA. There is a reason for this. The state vets are being much stricter about who they are allowing to run. There are plenty of horses that would have been allowed to run in the past, that they will not allow to run any more. The Eight Belles incident has actually saved alot of lives because the state vets have gotten much stricter as a direct result of Eight Belles. It shouldn't have taken such a well publicized incident for them to finally do something. There were way too many horses breaking down before the Eight Belles incident and yet nobody was doing anything about it. There were injured horses running every day that had no business running.

There were two big name horses this year entered in big races that were scratched and both of these horses would have been allowed to run in the past. I can promise you that both The Pamplemousse and I Want Revenge would have been allowed to run before the Eight Belles incident. But as a direct result of the Eight Belles, the tracks are being much stricter. Although the press reported otherwise, both The Pamplemousse and I Want Revenge were vet scratches. Had the state vet not forced those horses to scratch, they would have both run, even though both horses were injured and had no business running.

What kind of media would not report this? If they are saying it is a trainer scratch and not a vet scratch (which is a vital statistic in handicapping) doesn't it have to be true? Are you saying the vets say "Scratch him or I will?". How is that different from saying "Bench him or he will foul out"?

Yes, that is correct. They were basically told, "Scratch him or I will." In most situations, it wouldn't be done this way. In most situations, the horses would simply be vet scratches. But these two horses were high profile horses in high profile races. It looked better for everyone involved if these horses were voluntary scratched.

In the real world, I think a good anology would be when an employee is asked to resign, instead of getting fired. When a person resigns, it allows them to save face and it's just a better situation for everyone involved. There's much less controversy when someone resigns.

By the way, the state vets were obviously 100% correct in not allowing either of those horses to run. Both of those horses had pretty serious injuries and will be lucky if they ever make it back to the races again.

I have been an examining veterinarian for the state for 21 years. It is not an easy job. I have made "unpopular" decisions and taken horses out of big races and been yelled at, and worse.

Some of the horses have come back and worked and were found to be OK, but most were not. I would rather be wrong a thousand times and scratch a horse that turns out to be OK than just one time where I let the horse run even if I thought there was a problem.:{>:

Yes, Zito was a little annoyed at Bailey but the guy who was really furious at Bailey was the owner. I think he actually wanted to take Bailey to the stewards. Then as you said the horse came back a couple weeks later with Ramon Dominguez and he pulled up.

I remember about 20 years ago Burt Bacharach had a stakes filly that was put on the vet's list. Bacharach was furious. He berated the track vet publicly and said there was nothing wrong with the horse and that the horse would prove she was sound in her next workout. She did have a fast workout but was never seen again after that.

In these types of cases, it is rare that the owner will apologize to the vet when it turns out that the vet was right.

When a competent track vet or a jockey thinks that a horse is off, they are right 99% of the time.

I don't have pp's for this race...

Anyone know how many times he's run since this post? I'm shocked to see him here.

All three starts he ran second. For 10k, 16k then 12.5k.

Hope he wins and that he gets a nice home (if he's claimed) and that whatever is in his best interest happens.

They deserve one little final mention somewhere.

If I see their name(s), I'll mention them. If I was a fan I'll write as much or something I remember.

Does it matter? No.

It's just something I do... it's just something I do because it's all I can do and if other people don't see it or don't get it or think it's idiotic that's fine.

It's just me.

I hope this guy is alright and if not i hope he didn't have to suffer for too long.

If I never find out well I can still hope that either way his last moments will not be or were not completely terrible and frightening.

I guess I hope that for all of us.

They have Devil May Care. I assume she's the contender unless there's another one. We should know more about whether she's going after her work this weekend. I'm not sure about the mares and foals. Still looking around for at least a diagnosis of what was wrong with him whatever the result, but I did find this: http://www.saratogian.com/articles/2010/08/30/sports/doc4c7c64255ce0c234380838.txt

"The top three in the race were followed by Flying Private, Masala, and Malibu Moonshine, who was eased; the 8-year-old gelding jogged back to the unsaddling area under his own power but was vanned off."

I'm hoping that's a sign he's ok. Do horses get jogged over to the unsaddling area, vanned off, and end up fine? The article calls him a gelding, but I thought he was still intact.

From the DRF:

"Things went from bad to nightmarish for Rusty Arnold within a 30-minute span Sunday. First the veteran trainer sent out It’s Tea Time to be a no-threat fourth as the 5-2 second choice in the Spinster, and then he watched helplessly as Kopitar was euthanized after breaking down badly in the last race of the day.

Arnold said Kopitar, a 4-year-old gelding, shattered both right front sesamoids and suffered a condylar fracture.

“It’s a shame, because he’d been having such a good last few months,” said Arnold."

I have followed this one throughout his injury plagued 5 race career, bet on him yesterday.

I added him to the angels thread yesterday...

I figured someone would have as well.

Not that this matters but personally I only make threads for horses I'm very familiar with or who had some special meaning for me.

Being a newer fan, a lot of these names... while I understand how important they were... I leave it to someone who lived through the period and who has memories to pay tribute.

Anyway, poor guy.

Ramsgate, who was 2nd today at Aqueduct.

Hope he's okay.

(I've followed this one since he was 2 and he's one of the only horses left in my vs).

Would really appreciate any news. Thanks.

Rough day...

From Dave Grening, DRF:

Ramsgate diagnosed with an injured ankle; too much damage to be saved.

Great Emperor, slab fractures right knee; vanned off and then euthanized.

Rum Row got loose, ran to the gap, slid and fell suffering a fractured radius. Had to be euthanized.

RIP

Ramsgate did not make it. Its an awful, helpless feeling when you see a horse that we once had in so much distress and you can't do anything about it. He was such a cool little guy and all of us that work for Chad and Chad himself are all very upset about this.

Neither Ballet Ribbons nor Belly Button Dawn went down, but both lost their riders when Belly Button Dawn was being sharply pulled up on the lead while " going wrong " ...

Ballet Ribbons collided with BBD as she dropped back through the field ....

Both horses were seen galloping loose down the stretch ...

More than likely Ballet Ribbons is ok--BBD is listed as euthanized on PQ...

I looked around a little but can't find anything for him.

I'll keep looking and yeah I have no idea about that race.

Personally I love those and was bummed there was no Gray Ghost last year at Meadowlands.
