GP 10th (5:45pm): 57th Florida Derby (Gr. I), 3yo, 9f (P3, DD, Super)

Fascinating edition of GP meeting's feature event.. Race especially hard to decipher if you don't accept Big Brown as most likely winner..

1. Fierce Wind (Velasquez, C/Zito) 6-1: Zito continues string of pill box luck drawing inside with Sam Davis winner that was flattered by Big Truck's TB Derby score; Will have to get out early under Corny for position, and looms as possible board player if able to move forward speed-wise..

2. Smooth Air (Cruz/Stutts) 12-1: 2nd One of just 2 GSW here, and lone entrant with 3 90+ BSF's; Stutts' colt has been carefully conditioned for 2nd route try the old school way, and aced CRC tuneup blowout Tuesday; Is going to get lost on the board but is certain to sit ideal trip and can take it all at bonus tote; Attached myself early to this one and will swing for fences keying in top slots..

3. Da' Tara (Bravo/Zito) 20-1: Zito-LaPenta Tiznow broke maiden this trip/oval, but found next step a trifle deep; Takes goggles off and might be OK, but can't imagine scenario that boosts him into serious check-cashing range..

4. Tomcito (Chavez/Zanelli) 12-1: 3rd Near Triple Crown winner in the Andes, Street Cry bay could be absolutely anything or nothing, but will take a positive view of colt's opportunity to insert himself into domestic soph scene; Using..

5. Cool Gator (Castro/Vella) 20-1: Ontario homebred no worse on paper than several here, and should sit nice stalking trip; Just one more that could turn up in tri or super and not provoke much shock..

6. Nistle's Crunch (Leparoux/McPeek) 10-1: McPeek believes blinkers will move solid ALW bay up significantly and they will have to for him to impact this affair; Allen Farms NJ homebred has kept nice company and again, while not a win candidate, wouldn't be any surprise invading exotics in GS bow..

7. B B Frank (Castellano/Tarrant) 20-1: Swiped by Tarrant from Zito-LaPenta in maidenbreaker drop-down, and promptly aced ALW exam earning real speed fig; Has done a lot of developing already, and would need to hit yet another new top to impact his; Nice claim though..

8. Elysium Fields (Coa/Tagg) 4-1: Consistant Evans hombred bay probably the most reliable and logical entrant here, but FOY 2nd was big effort and concerned regression today; Tagg seems to have no such worry as El Prado son has drilled 20f since Fountain; Your call..

9. Hey Byrn (Lezcano/Plesa) 5-1: 4th Plesa's bay Put It Back son named for owner's late husband has been terrific in pair of Hallendale demolitions since calendar turned; Tactically inclined runner can adjust to any pace and has shown serious closing kick to boot; Respect..

10. Majestic Warrior (Douglas/Mott) 15-1: Hard to know what to expect from Mott-Steinbrenner Hopeful winner after LA Derby try that could be viewed as troubled or plain dreadful; Expecting better but remain unconvinced he wants to go 9f.. or even 8..

11. Face the Cat (Velazquez, J/Pletcher) 8-1: Sanan/Padua purchase moved from Pitts to Pletcher and promptly disappeared; Will have to come out flying from difficult launch point and will be pressured from one outside him as well; Has little margin for error if serious about Kentucky..

12. Big Brown (Desormeaux/Dutrow, R) 3-1: WON Dutrow big fig colt gets added test of burdensome post in graded stakes debut, but if he's what T-J tandem claims he is, it won't matter; Has real speed which could make him as imposing as claimed..

SELECTIONS:

1. #2 Smooth Air 2nd
2. #12 Big Brown WON
3. #9 Hey Byrn 4th
4. #8 Elysium Fields 11th

Has to be used.. In a field where only 2-3 have any quantifiable speed, can't ignore..

In a year where everyone claims the 3YO crop is substantially lacking any form a greatness I find it hard not to consider Big Brown the winner in this race. He's shown glimmers of great talent and I'd rather take the unknown angle over horses that have stamped themselves very average. If he's a cut above the 12 hole will not be a problem.

Off a maiden win and an Off the Turf race in the Slop ? Until he shows me h can compete with quality horses on a dry track (and he very well may), I have him as another overhyped horse with connections to New York. We get them every derby season and they are heart and bankbreakers. I like Smooth Air and Fierce Wind.

Thx Gus! Was a very good.. and very long.. day. Florida Derby the highlight obviously. Go easy on the Brown stuff yet. Those feet were heavily patched and they will have to be careful every single day for 5 weeks that nothing goes wrong. Think Roman Ruler or Declan's Moon. No foot, no horse. He's very nice though. I'm sticking with my plucky, 'Rocky'esque contender with the puncher's chance.

At this point, he'll (BB) have to beat me again in the Derby. BB's performance reminded me of Bellamy Road in the Wood. Smooth Air was gritty and earned his ticket to the Derby. Great story as well. Hey, maybe Blackberry Road has two big efforts in him? The next two weeks should be awesome as well.

Thx Willie.. Happy you scooped up the jacks! Well done... Considering the 3-2 number on the winner, the exotics were OK... Thought the P4 was generous as hell too considering the 3 winners after the must-use Bonnie Miss winner..

Thanks for some great info Steve, did well yesterday! Was I the only one that saw BB take a bad step 75 to 50 yards from finish? I agree it is still along way to derby day and he sounds like if he breaths wrong sometimes he may pop a quarter crack. On the way to windy city sat. and Johnnys for sure....at least twice.:D
