View Full Version : 2nd Annual Derby Trail Contest

I just wanted to get you all ready for the 2nd Annual Derby Trail Contest. Last year our winner was Paisjpq, followed by Mclem10011 and 2 Dollar Bill (Yea for all of them! :D ). This contest is simple, each week a list of stakes races for 3 year old horses will be posted and you will be asked to pick one horse for each race that you believe will be the winner. The “bet” you are placing is a $2 WPS and where ever your horse finishes, you will get that payout across the board (ie: if your horse wins, you will get the win/show/place payouts combined, if your horse places you will get place/show, etc.). It is strongly recommended that you play each race every week. You don’t lose “money” if you don’t play (and you don’t lose “money” if your pick loses), but you do lose the chance to make “money”. If you miss a week or start late, that ok – with the right longshot winner, anyone can do well!

AND as an added bonus, anyone who places bets before the KY Derby on the eventual winner gets those points (or $$$) multiplied by 10 (ie: Street Sense in last years Tampa Bay Derby paid $4.40 / $2.40 / $2.10 for a $2 bet across the board so your return was $8.90. With this contest, after he won the KY Derby, you would be credited with an additional $89 - Winning points of $8.90 x 10 = $89).

Our first race this year will be the Tropical Park Derby at Calder Race Course on January 1st. This is a 9 furlong race on the turf and last years place and show horses from this race went on to the Kentucky Derby (Sedgefield and Storm in May). I'll post the entries and past performances as soon as they become available.

Hopefully this makes sense, let me know if you want to play in the contest, I'd like to start getting the contest spreadsheet ready early. Good Luck to everyone and Happy Holidays!

This contest ends with the Derby. I'll also do a Triple Crown contest that will include the Derby, Preakness and Belmont (same as last year).

Last years winner received an engraved trophy

http://i12.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/06/32/f3_1.JPG

The runner-ups received an autographed photo of a 1st round NBA draftee (Detroit Pistons, Rodney Stuckey) and a t-shirt. I'm hoping this year we may be able to get some DRF or DT swag for prizes - we'll still give a trophy to the winner but I'd like to give something better to the cappers that finish place and show :o

p.s. No fee required for entry, but if you'd like to send me $$$, I'll take it! (just kidding)

what happens if i don't say "i'm in" but post a pick before the race?

am i in? if i am, doesn't that render all the "i'm in" post's meaningless? if i'm not why wasn't that spelled out in the rules?

i'm not sure if i'm in or not. i want to think.

you'll know once i post a pick.

In an ideal world, you will have your picks posted an hour before post time, but because I know that none of us live in an ideal world (except for hi im god, obviously he's in paradise) I'm ok with you posting your picks up until post time. If I'm home and watching the races on the computer, I'll monitor the thread and let you know when the contest is closed for that race. If I'm at the track that day (which I hope to be as much as possible since this is the last racing season for my home track, Bay Meadows), I'll go by what time your post was made and what time the race went off at - as long as your pick was made before the race started (your post must be time stamped the minute, or more, before the race started based on Equibase's "Time off" notation on the results page) your pick will count. This is not scientific nor precise but it's the best I can do and still give you a chance to see the post parade.

If you don't like my rules, if you b*tch and complain, if you think you're being cheated and it's unfair - I don't care. It's my contest (I pay for the prizes myself), my rules and everything worked fine last year and we all had fun. If you cause me grief and make this difficult, I just won't tally your score. This is suppose to be fun and help you keep track of the potential Derby horses leading up to the first Saturday in May. Please let's keep this fun.

I will continue to try to post free PP's whenever possible. If someone finds them before I do, send me the link and I'll get it up. Thanks for playing everyone, may the best capper win!

Everyone should be very thankful for DC for running this great contest. I helped DC a couple times in last years contest and it's time consuming get everybodies correct totals on days with multiple 3yo races. So if DC needs some help when needed don't hesitate, it will be greatly appreciated

"except for hi im god, obviously he's in paradise"

right.

running the contest is hard. running the universe is paradise.

that wasn't a complaint. just an observation.

i'm all for setting parameters and allowing free will. then smiting the whiners.

i'm sure this will be a great show.
